Cosmic Blue: Hamilton Launches New Khaki Field Murph 38 mm with a Refined Gradient Dial

From Hollywood to the Wrist

A watch that connects a father and daughter across time and space: In Christopher Nolan’s 2014 science-fiction blockbuster Interstellar, the Hamilton Khaki Field plays a pivotal role. The film tells the story of astronaut Cooper and his daughter Murph, with the watch ultimately becoming the link between them across the boundaries of time and space. Hamilton has maintained a close relationship with the world of film for decades, with its watches appearing in numerous movies and television productions. For Interstellar, however, the collaboration went a step further. Together with director Christopher Nolan and production designer Nathan Crowley, Hamilton developed a watch specifically for the storyline.

What began as a film prop took on a life of its own. Fans gave the watch the nickname “Murph” and called for a version they could wear themselves. Five years after Interstellar hit theaters, Hamilton responded in 2019 with the 42 mm Khaki Field Murph. Closely based on the film watch, it retained its distinctive design.

In 2022, Hamilton followed with the first Khaki Field Murph 38mm, responding to demand for a more compact case. Now, the next chapter in the model’s evolution brings a new gradient dial to the 38mm version. It moves away from the direct film reference while picking up on the story’s cosmic dimension.

Blue Like Ionized Gas

The new dial starts with an intense blue at its center before gradually becoming darker toward the edges, where it fades into black. The effect recalls the glow of ionized gases in sunlight as well as the depth of outer space. A grainy texture inspired by stardust adds another layer of depth to the dial. Depending on the angle of view, the surface creates subtle shifts in light. The dial also retains the characteristic elements of the Murph, including historically inspired cathedral hands and slightly curved, well-proportioned Arabic numerals. There is no date display, keeping the design clean and focused.

Field Watch Credentials

As a genuine field watch, the Murph combines its cinematic history with practical specifications. The stainless steel case measures 38mm in diameter and 11.1mm thick. An anti-reflective sapphire crystal protects the dial, while water resistance is rated to 100 meters. The watch is available either with a black leather strap and stainless steel pin buckle or a stainless steel bracelet.

Inside, the automatic H-10 movement provides an 80-hour power reserve. As is typical for Hamilton, the new model comes at an attractive price point: $1,045 on the stainless steel bracelet and $995 with a leather strap.
