To and Fro: H. Moser & Cie. Launches the Playful Pioneer Retrograde Seconds
The H. Moser & Cie. Pioneer Retrograde Seconds is a fresh and bold addition to the brand’s renowned Pioneer collection, combining technical mastery with refined aesthetics and a twist that is typical for the Swiss manufacture. The standout feature is the retrograde seconds complication, which sees the seconds hand sweep across a semi-circular scale before snapping back to its starting position. In contrast to classical retrograde seconds, the hand flashes back every 30 seconds thanks to a double snail cam.
Developed in collaboration with the Swiss specialist Agenhor, the ingenuity lies in the transparency of its mechanism, designed to be both technical and playful. At the end of each cycle, the snail, which is in permanent contact with the sector or finger, releases the energy accumulated and stored by a hairspring located under the seconds hand axis, with a stud holder mounted on the mainplate. The rack, which is also visible under the retrograde seconds bridge, positions the hand precisely on its path and releases the accumulated energy all at once, while keeping the mechanism under control. Meanwhile, the aesthetics of the retrograde seconds silver-moulded skeletonized bridge are reminiscent of H. Moser & Cie's emblematic tourbillon bridge. A two-tone disc beneath the snail indicates whether the watch is in the first or second 30-second period of the cycle, adding an extra touch of dynamism and visual appeal to the dial.
Speaking of the dial: In true H. Moser & Cie. fashion, it is minimalist with attention to detail. The Midnight Blue fumé background is accentuated by a sunburst pattern that adds depth and play to the light. The brand's subtle touch of placing its logo in transparent lacquer allows the dial to retain a clean, almost minimalist aesthetic. The leaf-shaped hour and minute hands filled with Super-LumiNova offer a functional yet elegant contrast to the dial, ensuring legibility in low-light conditions. Faceted applique indices add another level of sophistication, giving the timepiece a refined finish.
At the heart of the watch lies H. Moser & Cie.'s HMC 250 automatic caliber, equipped with an automatic bi-directional pawl winding system that ensures efficient energy generation. It features an engraved oscillating weight, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail. With a power reserve of at least three days, it offers comfortable autonomy. Among the HMC 250's sophisticated features are the hacking seconds function, allowing for precise time setting, and the in-house Original Straumann hairspring, renowned for its precision and reliability. Visually, the movement is stunning as to be expected, with an anthracite finish and Moser’s distinctive double stripes, and the partially skeletonized bridges revealing details of the intricate inner workings.
The Pioneer Retrograde Seconds comes in a stainless steel case that is water-resistant to 100 meters and equipped with a blue rubber strap. Pricing is marked at $21,900.
