Leica, a brand best known for its iconic cameras and optical innovation, continues its bold foray into the world of fine watchmaking with its latest launch. The newly released Leica ZM 1 and ZM 2 in Urban Green are the latest additions to the brand’s growing mechanical collection. These timepieces showcase the same precision, functionality, and design clarity that have long defined Leica’s approach to horology.

Leica first entered the world of mechanical watches in 2018 with the Leica L1 and L2. These hand-wound watches made an immediate impression thanks to their clean, functional design and thoughtful technical details inspired by the world of photography. Powered by exclusive manufacture calibers, they set the tone for what would become Leica’s new horological identity.

With the Urban Green versions of the ZM 1 and ZM 2, Leica brings a fresh, nature-inspired aesthetic to its watch portfolio. The dial features a striking dégradé effect, transitioning from a soft, earthy green at the center to a deep black around the edges. A vertical satin finish adds texture and depth, while the subtle color shift gives the watches a calm yet confident presence on the wrist. This new palette complements the minimalist design language that runs throughout the collection.

Despite the new look, the core design and functions of the ZM 1 and ZM 2 remain unchanged. Both models feature rhodium-plated and diamond-cut hour markers and hands, a date with quick-set functionality at 3 o’clock, and a prominent small seconds display at 6 o’clock. A standout element is the patented crown function indicator located at 3 o’clock, a nod to the tactile user experience of Leica cameras. Across from it, between 7 and 8 o’clock, sits the power reserve indicator, which cleverly uses two gradually closing shutters to visualize remaining energy.

The ZM 2 adds further utility with a second time zone, adjustable via an additional crown that rotates the internal bezel. A day-night indicator at 4 o’clock provides visual context for the second time zone, rounding out its travel-friendly features.

Both watches are housed in a 41mm case made from durable 316L stainless steel, with a water resistance rating of 50 meters. The case design reflects a balance between classic elegance and modern precision, with a mix of high-gloss polished and satin-brushed surfaces, along with chamfered and polished edges. One of the most distinctive features, inspired by Leica’s camera heritage, is the patented pusher crown. Instead of pulling the crown out to set the time, users press it— activating a zero-reset mechanism that automatically returns the seconds hand to the 12 o’clock position for precise adjustment.

Inside, the in-house developed and finely finished ZM 1 and ZM 2 hand-wound calibers beat at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offer an impressive 60-hour power reserve. These movements underscore Leica’s commitment to mechanical excellence and meticulous detail.

The Leica ZM 1 and ZM 2 Urban Green are available through selected Leica Stores and the brand’s online shop. Each model comes with a choice of three strap options: a finely woven Milanese bracelet with a folding clasp, or a black alligator or calfskin leather strap with a pin buckle.

Pricing starts at $10,850 for the Leica ZM 1 Urban Green and at $14,950 for the Leica ZM 2 Urban Green.
