In 2025, the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) marks two significant milestones: 160 years of lifesaving operations on the North and Baltic Seas, and 150 years of their iconic donation boxes. To commemorate this extraordinary dual anniversary, Mühle-Glashütte presents a special limited edition of its professional-grade dive watch: the S.A.R. Mission-Timer “160 Years of DGzRS.” Limited to just 160 pieces, this commemorative timepiece not only celebrates a legacy of maritime service but contributes to it directly – with 100 Euro from each sale going to support the DGzRS’s vital, independently funded rescue missions.

Engineering Meets Emotion: A Watch with Story and Substance

Robust yet refined, the “160 Years of DGzRS” edition is housed in a 43mm titanium case that emphasizes performance and wearability. Weighing approximately 105 grams, it wears surprisingly light despite its tool-watch credentials. The case is fitted with a unidirectional ceramic bezel and a 2.5mm-thick, double AR-coated sapphire crystal – ensuring optimal legibility and resilience in harsh environments. The screw-down crown and 50-bar water resistance complete the specs for serious maritime use.

At the heart of this model beats the automatic SW 400-1 movement, modified and finely regulated by the German brand. Featuring the brand’s proprietary woodpecker-neck regulator and customized rotor, the movement is adjusted in six positions and tuned to a daily rate of 0 to +8 seconds.

A Dial That Tells a Deeper Story

What sets this anniversary edition apart is its striking dial, which combines technical clarity with meaningful design. The matte titanium-gray surface is etched with a fine line structure – representing isobaths, or underwater topographic contours, of the Weser estuary near Bremerhaven, the location of the German sea rescue coordination center. It’s a quiet, intricate detail that subtly roots the watch in the very waters the DGzRS has patrolled for generations.

Red accents make symbolic appearances throughout: The tip of the central seconds hand is painted in the DGzRS’s signature rescue red, while the hour markers, white by day, glow in navy blue at night and reveal a crimson hue under UV light. This playful yet purposeful color change nods to the organization's identity in a discreet and compelling way.

"More than 1,000 sea rescuers on 60 rescue units are deployed around 2,000 times a year – around the clock, in all weather conditions, financed exclusively by voluntary donations, without any state or public funds."

A Caseback Engraved with Purpose

Flip the watch over and the commemorative elements come into full view. The titanium caseback is deeply engraved with the familiar image of the collecting boat – a miniature donation vessel that has represented the DGzRS for 150 years and played a key role in its grassroots funding model. The engraving also features the jubilee script: “150 Years of Sammelschiffchen. 160 Years DGzRS – The Maritime Rescuers”, along with the watch’s individual limited-edition number.

The collaboration between Mühle-Glashütte and the DGzRS traces back to 2002, with the development of the original S.A.R. Rescue-Timer. Since then, Mühle has consistently delivered timepieces built to meet the demanding standards of professional rescue operations at sea – and this latest limited edition carries that legacy forward.

Precision With Purpose

True to its tool-watch DNA, the S.A.R. Mission-Timer “160 Years of DGzRS” delivers superb legibility and usability in every detail. A large-format date display – around 30 percent larger than standard – ensures at-a-glance readability without the need for a magnifier. The applied indices and bold orientation markers at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock echo the high-contrast design language established by earlier models in the S.A.R. family.

The integrated black rubber strap, secured with a titanium folding clasp and diving extension, offers ergonomic comfort for daily wear or over a wetsuit. Meanwhile, the screwed strap bars reinforce the watch’s rugged construction and reliability.

More Than a Watch: A Statement of Support

Beyond its technical merits and thoughtful design, this timepiece carries a meaningful mission. With 100 Euro (about 115 USD) from each purchase donated directly to the organization, every wearer becomes part of the lifeline that supports Germany’s volunteer sea rescuers – who, without any government funding, have saved more than 87,300 lives since their founding in 1865.
