The Longines Legend Diver 59 Marries Vintage Character With Modern Capability

Inspired by the brand’s original 1959 Super-Compressor diver, the new Longines Legend Diver 59 combines retro aesthetics with COSC-certified modern performance and a new Milanese mesh bracelet.

Divers’ watches remain one of the strongest categories in contemporary watchmaking. Offering high functionality and engineering prowess alongside a sporty yet versatile style, they continue to rank among the most sought-after timepieces on the market. Yet today, there is arguably only one genre capable of surpassing the classic dive watch in popularity: the vintage-inspired diver. Blending the aesthetics of the 1950s and 1960s with modern materials and technical refinements, heritage-style dive watches have become a defining segment of the industry. It is therefore little surprise that brands continue to revisit their archives in search of iconic references worthy of revival. Few periods have proven as influential as the golden age of dive watches during the mid 1950s and early 1960s — an era whose designs remain remarkably fresh more than half a century later. With the new Longines Legend Diver 59, the Swiss manufacturer once again turns to one of its most historically significant underwater timepieces. The latest addition to the Heritage collection from Longines pays tribute to the original 1959 Legend Diver while integrating serious modern watchmaking technology, authentic proportions, and enhanced performance credentials.

The new Legend Diver 59 faithfully preserves many of the defining characteristics that established the original model as one of the most recognizable compressor-style dive watches of its era. Most notably, the watch retains the dual-crown configuration and the internally rotating bezel system first introduced by Longines in 1936 and later incorporated into the 1959 Diver. Housed beneath the domed sapphire crystal, the bidirectional bezel is operated via the screw-down crown positioned at 2 o’clock. Protected inside the case rather than exposed externally, the bezel design minimizes the risk of accidental adjustment or damage during use while maintaining the clean symmetry associated with vintage compressor divers. Graduated with a 60-minute scale and incorporating a luminescent triangle at 12 o'clock, the bezel preserves the original 1959 aesthetic with its grained black finish and metallic indexes.

The grained black dial stays close to the historical design of the original reference, featuring oversized Arabic numerals at 12, 3, 6, and 9 o’clock alongside painted indexes and satinated hands. All luminescent elements are coated in “Light Old Radium” Superluminova, recreating the warm appearance of aged tritium while ensuring modern nighttime and under-water legibility. A luminescent tip on the central seconds hand further confirms the watch is running during dives.

One of the defining updates for the 2026 model is the newly designed steel Milanese mesh bracelet, which gives the watch a more refined and period-correct appearance while improving comfort on the wrist.

The bracelet features a double-folding safety clasp with micro-adjustment functionality, while Longines also includes an additional black rubber “tropic”-style strap.

The steel case measures 42mm in diameter and 12.85mm thick, closely echoing the proportions of the original 1959 reference. Water resistance, however, has been upgraded substantially from the historic model’s 120-meter rating to 300 meters, and the watch meets the ISO 6425 standard for certified dive watches.

Inside beats the exclusive Longines caliber L888.6 automatic movement. Equipped with a silicon balance spring and anti-magnetic components, the movement delivers a high magnetic resistance while offering a 72-hour power reserve. The fully assembled watch is also officially chronometer-certified by the COSC. Pricing is marked at $4,100.
