Introducing the Ming 29.06 Peep Show
An optical illusion for the wrist
Independent watchmaker Ming has built its reputation on experimental dial architecture and the manipulation of light. With the new Ming 29.06 Peep Show, the brand pushes that philosophy into even more theatrical territory, unveiling a watch whose dial can seemingly disappear entirely depending on the position of the hands. The effect is both technical and mesmerizing. Instead of using conventional hands, Ming replaces them with rotating discs made from linearly polarized sapphire. As these discs align, light passes through to reveal the vibrant, iridescent dial beneath. When they rotate 90 degrees relative to one another, the polarized layers block light transmission and the dial turns completely black. The result is a constantly changing display that shifts between vivid color and darkness as time passes.

MingBeneath this optical illusion lies one of Ming’s signature multi-phasic dials, first introduced with the brand’s 57.04 Iris. The metal dial features a deeply machined guilloché surface coated with a color-shifting treatment that reflects different hues depending on viewing angle and ambient light. When visible, the dial bursts into shades that appear almost liquid beneath the sapphire crystal.

MingThe watch is housed in Ming’s familiar 29-Series titanium case, measuring 40mm in diameter and 11.8mm thick. Its bezel-less construction allows the sapphire crystal to stretch seamlessly across the entire top surface, creating an uninterrupted view of the dial. Characteristic flying-blade lugs continue the sculptural aesthetic that has become a hallmark of the collection. Turning the watch over reveals the Schwarz-Etienne for Ming Caliber ASE 200.M1, a second-generation self-winding movement developed specifically for the brand. Designed by Ming Thein, the movement emphasizes transparency and depth through extensively open-worked bridges finished with diamond-cut anglage. A skeletonized barrel provides a visual indication of the remaining power reserve, while a tungsten micro-rotor mounted on ceramic bearings delivers efficient bidirectional winding and approximately 86 hours of autonomy.
