Baume & Mercier Riviera Moonphase: An Enticing Proposition

Organic evolution is one of the most challenging things to achieve in a product range. It requires new products to be in line with current trends, preferably a bit ahead of the curve, but still embody the brand's original DNA. Baume & Mercier achieved this with the Riviera, which has been part of its collection since 1973. Today's Riviera, the 5th generation, still has the recognizable twelve-sided bezel but is overall a bit bolder, with strong, clean lines, and available in larger diameters. However, it hasn't been forgotten that a Riviera also stands for elegance, as the new moon phases model proves.

A moon phase is a cherished complication, although its practical use is not as prevalent in today's world. For the Riviera it adds a pleasant contrast. With a 43mm large case, available on a sturdy bracelet or rubber strap, it is a serious sport watch, all the more as it is water resistant up to 10 ATM. At six o'clock, the moon phase display adds a poetic character to the timepiece. Baume & Mercier opt for a translucent insert so that you can see the entire disc. This brings the complication in line with the sportive nature of the Riviera. A centrally mounted hand indicates the date, printed on the ring surrounding the moon phase display. It is a clever setup that makes the Riviera stand out even more amongst the, let's be honest, busy universe of stainless steel sports watches. It also gives it a bit of a relaxing character, as the moon phase serves as a focal point of peace and quiet in this hectic world.

Baume & Mercier offers the Riviera Moonphases in two versions. The first combines a stainless steel case with a matching bracelet and a blue dial. The second model is fitted with a rubber strap and showcases a dial in grey tones. The screws that secure the bezel have a black ADLC coating in both models. Inside the case of each of them ticks a manufacture Baumatic caliber. It is visible to the sapphire crystal insert in the caseback and combines a five-day power reserve with the ability to withstand magnetic fields up to 1500 gauss.

The Baume & Mercier Riviera Moonphase is priced at $4,850 for the model with the grey dial on a strap, and $5,200 for the blue dial version on the bracelet.
