A. Lange & Söhne has unveiled a new edition of the Richard Lange Jumping Seconds, underscoring the Glashütte-based traditional brand’s dedication to precision watchmaking and elegant design. Nine years after its debut, the model, which is named after the company founder Ferdinand Adolph Lange’s first-born son – a watchmaker, inventor and engineer – continues to set benchmarks in rate accuracy and legibility, now offered in a striking new combination of a warm pink-gold dial within a white-gold case. Limited to just 100 pieces, the variant brings renewed attention to one of the manufacture’s most technically sophisticated timepieces.

The Richard Lange Jumping Seconds was conceived with a singular focus: to spotlight the smallest unit of time, the seconds, and elevate it to center stage. Its oversized seconds sub dial dominates the regulator-style display, with the hours and minutes relegated to two smaller dials below. This arrangement recalls the historic chronometer No. 93 by Johann Heinrich Seyffert, who in the late 18thcentury established the fundamentals of precision timekeeping in Germany and also inspired Ferdinand Adolph Lange, and whose timekeeping instruments guided scientific figures such as Alexander von Humboldt. The watch’s technical identity is shaped by three interacting mechanisms that complement each other: a constant-force escapement, a jumping-seconds mechanism, and Lange’s proprietary Zero-Reset function. The constant-force escapement ensures even energy distribution across the 42-hour power reserve, generating the precise impulse that also drives the seconds hand forward in exact jumps, exactly 60 times per minute. The Zero-Reset mechanism is equipped with a multi-disc clutch: when the crown is pulled, the seconds hand instantly jumps to the zero position, making time setting with one-second accuracy possible. Additionally, a triangular indication at the intersection between the hour and minute circles switches to red ten hours before the power reserve is depleted, thus delivering a reminder to soon rewind the watch.

Through the sapphire-crystal case back, the choreography of these components can be observed in motion. An aperture in the three-quarter plate reveals how the remontoir spring of the constant-force escapement receives fresh energy from the mainspring barrel once a second, delivering it to the going train. Mounted on the escape-wheel arbor beneath a transparent bearing jewel, a rotating star controls the jumping seconds mechanism. Also on display is the complex lever system of the Zero-Reset mechanism and its arresting spring that blocks the balance, enabling precise time setting.

The manually wound calibre L094.1, composed of 390 parts, is assembled twice in accordance with Lange tradition and meticulously finished. The remontoir spring of the constant-force escapement and the balance spring are manufactured in-house. Typical Lange quality hallmarks, such as the hand-engraved balance cock, screwed gold chatons, blued screws as well as the three-quarter plate made of untreated German silver which is embellished with decorations and polishing techniques, come to life through the exhibition case back.

“The Richard Lange pairs comprehensive precision with individual elegance. On the one hand, it offers superb rate accuracy as well as quick and precise settability; on the other, our watchmakers succeeded in integrating the complex mechanisms in a confined space, thus enabling a flat architecture of elegant proportions. The ensemble of colors – the case in 750 white gold and the pink-gold dial with contrasting black markings – represents a distinguishing feature of the watch.”

Anthony de Haas, Director Product Development at A. Lange & Söhne

Measuring 39.9mm in diameter and 10.6mm in height, the case maintains the harmonious proportions of the earlier versions. The Richard Lange Jumping Seconds is equipped with a dark-brown leather strap. Pricing is available upon request.
