Ming 37.02 Monolith: A Stealthy Statement in Shades of Gray
Ming, the independent watchmaker known for its avant-garde aesthetics, expands its core collection with a stealthy new variant: the 37.02 Monolith. The limited edition comes a stealthy, dark-coated evolution of the 37.02 Minimalist that debuted in 2024.
Where the original 37.02 heralded the brand’s return to readily available, core collection models, the Monolith brings an added layer of mystique. Clad in anthracite DLC, the stainless steel case is a study in subtle contrasts, blending brushed and matte-blasted finishes across its 38mm diameter and 11mm profile. Despite the dimensions, the Monolith wears visually larger and thinner thanks to a narrow bezel and fluid lugs.
While its monochrome aesthetic suggests restraint, the 37.02 Monolith is anything but simple. At its heart lies a sapphire dial with a uniquely dynamic quality. Depending on the light, it can glow, reflect, or recede into a void-like blackness. All dial markings are laser-cut into the sapphire and filled with Ming’s proprietary Polar White luminous compound, an unusual luminescent material that glows white across the visible spectrum. The hands, meanwhile, are treated with Super-LumiNova X1 Blue, creating a subtle contrast that prioritizes legibility in darkness.
Powering the Monolith is the Sellita for MING SW300.M1 automatic movement, equipped with skeletonized anthracite bridges, plates, and rotor, a custom execution exclusive to MING that matches the watch’s stealth aesthetic. The movement delivers a 45-hour power reserve and is visible through the exhibition case back, itself sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating.
True to the brand’s philosophy of daily wearability, the Monolith offers 100 meters of water resistance, secured by a double-gasket system. It is attached to a Mango FKM rubber strap, adding a fresh pop of color that contrasts the otherwise grayscale palette.
As with many of Ming’s limited production models, exclusivity is part of the appeal. Only 100 pieces of the 37.02 Monolith will be produced in 2025. They are priced at CHF3,500 or approximately $4,390 when converted to USD.
