Introducing the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical 36 mm
The return of a rare military watch
With the new Khaki Field Mechanical 36 mm, Hamilton revives a rare historical reference. The watch takes inspiration from the little-known FAPD 5101, a navigation watch issued to U.S. Air Force navigators in the early 1970s. Like the original, the new model is powered by a hand-wound movement and stays remarkably close to the functional spirit of its predecessor. Rather than turning the watch into a nostalgic vintage exercise, Hamilton approaches the Khaki Field Mechanical 36 mm as a faithful reinterpretation of a purpose-built tool watch. Its restrained design, compact proportions, and robust construction reflect the enduring appeal of classic field watches.

Vintage FAPD 5101
HamiltonWithin Hamilton’s historical lineup of instrument watches, the FAPD 5101 occupied a distinctive position. At a time when most military and professional watches were noticeably smaller, its 36-mm case already appeared substantial. Equally unusual was the hand-wound Hamilton Caliber 684, a movement developed specifically for this model and never used elsewhere. The watch was designed with practical demands in mind. Fixed strap bars improved security during use, the boxed acrylic crystal was considered durable and easy to replace, and an antimagnetic dust cover protected the movement inside. It is precisely this uncompromising functionality that defines the appeal of vintage field watches today: objects whose design emerged directly from their intended purpose.

HamiltonThe new Khaki Field Mechanical preserves many of these details almost unchanged. Its stainless-steel case measures 36mm in diameter and modest 10.2mm in height, while the fixed bars and prominent boxed acrylic crystal remain closely aligned with the historical original. Even the inner dust cover has been retained, directly referencing the architecture of the vintage model. At the same time, Hamilton incorporates technical upgrades expected from a modern everyday watch. Super-LumiNova Grade X2 on the indexes, and hands of the military-style dial provides significantly stronger luminosity than historical materials, while water resistance has increased to 100 meters.

HamiltonThe modernization becomes most evident inside the watch. Replacing the original caliber is Hamilton’s hand-wound H-50 movement with a Nivachron balance spring and an 80-hour power reserve. The updated movement combines the spirit of the original with contemporary durability and improved resistance to magnetic fields. Hamilton will produce the Khaki Field Mechanical 36 mm exclusively during 2026, giving the watch an additional historical dimension. The limited production period commemorates the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence and subtly references the brand’s American heritage.
As is typical for Hamilton, pricing remains relatively accessible. Delivered on a NATO textile strap, the Khaki Field Mechanical 36 mm is priced at $725.
