A Fusion of Horological Innovation and Traditional Artistry: Ulysse Nardin Unveils the Freak X Gold Enamel

Since its audacious debut in 2001, the Ulysse Nardin Freak has stood as a symbol of boundary-breaking watchmaking. Lauded for its revolutionary engineering and pioneering use of silicon components, the Freak family has continuously evolved by balancing avant-garde mechanical complexity with whimsical artistic flourishes. The latest addition, the Freak X Gold Enamel, continues this path by merging its sophisticate working with the time-honored craft of enamel guilloché.

Positioned within the more accessible Freak X sub-line, the new release introduces a refined take on the Freak’s signature design. Unlike its predecessors, the Freak X models feature a conventional crown—marking a shift from the original's crownless, bezel-set mechanism, a brainchild of the visionary watchmaker Ludwig Oechslin. Since its 2019 introduction, the Freak X has served as a gateway to the Freak universe, with references boasting aventurine mainplates, silicon marquetry, and even optical illusion dials. Now, Ulysse Nardin elevates the concept further with a shimmering blue enamel guilloché mainplate, housed within a 43mm pink gold and PVD-coated titanium case that stands 13.38mm high and is water-resistant to 50 meters. It is produced by the specialist Donze Cadrans.

Though it may resemble a dial, the intricate guilloché surface is in fact the top plate of the movement itself—an integral part of the Freak’s mechanical drama. At the heart of the spectacle lies the now-iconic carousel movement, which rotates once every hour to indicate the time. Traditional hands are absent; instead, the entire movement becomes a kinetic sculpture. The hour pointer is mounted on the large gear surrounding the dial, while the minute indication is provided by the central bridge, which also carries the oversized, ultra-light silicium balance wheel. Further aesthetic contrast is delivered through pink gold-finished connecting gears, which accent the cool tones of the enamel and the structural precision of the movement.

Powering the Freak X Gold Enamel is Ulysse Nardin’s in-house caliber UN-230. This self-winding movement is composed of 214 components and offers a 72-hour power reserve, operating at a frequency of 3 Hz (21,600 vibrations per hour). Its silicon-based components—including the balance spring, escapement wheel, and anchor—are not only impervious to magnetic fields but also eliminate the need for lubrication, ensuring long-term precision and durability.

Limited to 120 pieces, the Freak X Gold Enamel is presented on a blue alligator leather strap. Pricing is marked at $48,500 without taxes.
