Seiko Unveils Hand-Engraved Platinum Masterpiece at Watches and Wonders

Grand Seiko’s latest addition to its Masterpiece Collection, the SBGZ009, embodies its finest craftsmanship. Inspired by a snow-covered birch forest, the limited edition of 50 pieces from the Micro Artist Studio features a fully engraved 950 platinum case. Each model is individually crafted and manually engraved with grooves that reflect the pattern of a birch tree trunk.

A silver dial complements the 38.5mm platinum 950 case, which features Grand Seiko’s signature Shinshu pattern with a metallic texture. The hour and minute hands, as well as the hand-applied diamond markers, are made of 14-karat white gold. The minute track, lettering, and brand name at six o’clock are also engraved. The seconds hand is tempered in a shade of gray.

On the inside, the hand-wound Spring Drive caliber 9R02 beats using a double barrel as well as the brand’s Torque Return system, which harnesses unused energy to increase the power reserve – a maximum of 84 hours, which is indicated on the rear side. The highly accurate movement (± 1 second per day) is beautifully finished and decorated, with the barrel taking inspiration from a bell flower, the symbol of Shiojiri, where the watches are produced at the Micro Artist Studio.

Pricing for the Hand-Engraved Manual-Winding Spring Drive Limited Edition ref. SBGZ009 is marked at $79,000.
