Hamilton Brings “Interstellar” to Earth with Khaki Field Murph

Hamilton watches have been seen in many movies over the years — from the brand’s very first silver screen appearance in 1951’s The Frogmen, to Elvis Presley rocking a Ventura in Blue Hawaii, to Bruce Willis mowing down bad guys with a Jazzmaster on his wrist in the Die Hard films — but perhaps never more prominently than in 2014’s Interstellar, in which a Hamilton Khaki Field watch plays a pivotal role in saving the world. Now Hamilton is releasing a special version of that watch, identical to the model used for the movie with the exception of one identifying detail that should appeal to its ardent fans. Read on to discover this week’s Watch to Watch, the Hamilton Khaki Field Murph.

The Hamilton Khaki Field Murph is a reproduction of a watch that played a key role in the sci-fi blockbuster Interstellar.

In Interstellar, Matthew McConaughey plays Cooper, a former NASA pilot, enlisted for a time- and dimension-spanning outer space mission to save humanity from a looming threat, who leaves behind his watch with his beloved daughter, Murph (played by Mackenzie Foy as a child and by Jessica Chastain as an adult). In the movie’s resolution, Cooper communicates the essential data that will rescue humanity from extinction by sending Morse code signals from another dimension through the seconds hand of the watch, a Hamilton Khaki Field that watch-connoisseur fans of the movie have since nicknamed “The Murph.”

The Hamilton Khaki Field Murph is, in all its essential elements, an exact reproduction of the watch featured in Interstellar. It has a 42-mm case in stainless steel; a black dial with nickel-coated hands inlaid with beige Super-LumiNova; a black leather strap with steel pin buckle; and, inside, an automatic H10 movement, produced exclusively for Hamilton by ETA, its sister brand within the Swatch Group, whose signature asset is its impressive 80-hour power reserve. One small detail differentiates this commercial version of the Khaki Field from its cinematic predecessor and at the same time pays homage to it: the Morse code for the word “Eureka” — which Murph exclaims in the movie’s climactic scene after she discovers, through her watch’s coded signals, the formula that saves humanity — is subtly printed in lacquer on the seconds hand.

The watch itself is not a limited edition but the packaging for the initial 2,555 models is. Hamilton collaborated with Interstellar’s award-winning production designer, Nathan Crowley, to produce a special box that replicates the multicolored striped effect of the tesseract in which Cooper learns he can communicate with his daughter through time and space through the bestowed watch. The Hamilton Khaki Field Murph (Ref. H70605731) is priced at $995 and will be available worldwide in May 2019.
