Sponsored: Hands-on with the Glashütte Original Senator Excellence Perpetual Calendar

Glashütte Original, the German luxury watchmaker, has consistently delivered exceptional timepieces— through its creations bringing together a balanced combination of traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. Among its distinguished mechanical offerings, the Senator Excellence line stands out, representing a modern generation of timeless classics.

In the spotlight now are four new variants: two Perpetual Calendar models, and two Panorama Date Moon Phase watches. The former of these, the Senator Excellence Perpetual Calendar, WatchTime had the opportunities to go hands-on with, with the watch embodying an understated luxury from afar that packs plenty of mechanical and aesthetic intrigue upon a closer glance.

The Senator Excellence Perpetual Calendar is in a class of its own; first launched in 2017 after the initial introduction of the Senator Excellence line a year earlier, the series has set the bar for perpetual calendar timepieces in style and performance. The new updates to the line are available in stainless steel and red gold, with each 42mm case finished with a meticulous combination of satin-brushed and polished techniques. While the dial of the design is undoubtedly the watch’s primary appeal, the finely-finished case serves as a perfect canvas for the timepiece’s other elements, with a 50m water resistance ensuring ease of wear throughout the day.

Underneath a sapphire crystal, pure elegance defines the superbly crafted dials of these Glashütte-made watches. The perpetual calendar— a feat of watchmaking complexity— finds a harmonious place within the Senator Excellence aesthetic, with an off-centered presentation that is at once as captivating by its uniqueness as equally easy to read. A galvanic silver dial with ivory-colored accents is used in the red gold version, while a galvanic grey dial with blue elements is put to use for the stainless steel variant, both providing a balanced backdrop for the watch’s displays. The velvety surface texture, combined with applied indexes in solid gold, creates a visual depth that adds to the watch’s allure.

The heart of these timepieces is the state-of-the-art Glashütte Original Calibre 36-12, an extremely well-finished mechanism with plenty of technical prowess. Offering a power reserve of at least 100 hours and featuring an antimagnetic silicon balance spring, these automatic movements are a testament to German watchmaking precision. The newly designed skeletonized rotors, adorned with the brand’s Double-G logo and an oscillating mass in 21-carat gold, provide a captivating view of the intricately decorated movement. Each detail, including the hand-engraved balance cock, showcases the meticulous craftsmanship synonymous with Glashütte Original.

The Glashütte Original Senator Excellence Perpetual Calendar stands as a fusion of elegance and precision. From its refined case to the meticulously crafted dial and the sophisticated movement within, this timepiece is a symbol of enduring quality and style. The new watches are available now via Glashütte Original and authorized boutiques, with the stainless steel variant marked at $21,900 and the red gold edition priced at $31,000.
