With the Prospex 1968 Heritage Automatic GMT Diver, Seiko unveils a modern reinterpretation of its legendary 1960s diver’s watch. This updated automatic timepiece is water-resistant up to 300 meters and features a second time zone display, all wrapped in a sporty, eye-catching design that evokes a longing for sun, sea, and adventure.

One of the most fascinating aspects of watch design is how timeless aesthetics continue to captivate decades after their debut. Vintage-inspired models that preserve their original charm are more desirable than ever— whether elegant dress watches, functional chronographs, or rugged pilot and diver’s watches. A standout in the latter category is the new Prospex 1968 Heritage Automatic GMT Diver, based on Seiko’s iconic 1968 Diver. Like the original, it focuses on clean lines and no-nonsense functionality, now paired with the durability of a modern sports watch.

Naturally, the materials and features have been brought up to today's standards— enhanced water resistance, improved lume, and a precise automatic movement. Seiko has also added a GMT function, making this watch an ideal travel companion for the upcoming season.

Even if your next getaway is still on the horizon, the combination of the silvery-white dial and deep blue ceramic bezel (used to track dive time) will immediately spark dreams of maritime escapes. The bold hour markers and hands are coated with Seiko’s LumiBrite, ensuring excellent legibility in all lighting conditions. A red-tipped central GMT hand tracks a second time zone, with the 24-hour scale positioned on the rehaut. A date window discreetly sits between 4 and 5 o’clock.

Thanks to this practical setup, the Prospex 1968 Heritage Automatic GMT Diver also transitions seamlessly into a business setting. Its 42mm case, crafted from hard-coated stainless steel, is inspired by the original design but updated with contemporary refinements. Polished case sides add a touch of sophistication, while the robust three-link metal bracelet comes equipped with a folding clasp, safety buttons, and a locking mechanism. Seiko’s newly developed Slide Adjuster allows for size adjustments in six steps of about 2.5mm each— ideal for shifts in temperature or active lifestyles.

Inside, the in-house caliber 6R54 keeps time with precision. This movement features bi-directional automatic winding, a hacking seconds function for accurate time-setting, and delivers a power reserve of over 72 hours. Its daily accuracy ranges from -15 to +25 seconds.

The Seiko Prospex 1968 Heritage Automatic GMT Diver will be available starting June 2025 at a retail price of approximately $2,136 when converted to USD.
