With less than two days to go, WatchTime New York 2024 is just around the corner, taking place in Manhattan from October 18 to 20. This year, Lang & Heyne will be among the distinguished watchmakers showcasing their craftsmanship and expertise, this time featuring the Manufaktur Edition of their Anton model.
In the realm of haute horlogerie, few complications captivate collectors quite like the tourbillon. A delicate mechanism that defies gravity, it was invented by the legendary Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1801 to counteract the effects of gravity on the precision of pocket watches. Fast forward over two centuries, and the allure of the tourbillon remains undiminished— especially with the introduction of the exquisite "Manufaktur Edition" of the Anton model by Lang & Heyne.
The term "flying" tourbillon has taken on new significance with this limited edition, which features a captivating design that invites a closer look. The lower section of the dial is intentionally left open, allowing enthusiasts to peer through and witness the mesmerizing choreography of the tourbillon. The rehaut acts as a reflective surface, offering a stunning backdrop of the intricate mechanisms at play.
The Anton’s flying tourbillon is a testament to Lang & Heyne's commitment to refinement. Drawing inspiration from an intricate design invented by Alfred Helwig, a teacher at Glashütte's watchmaking school, in 1921, the watch showcases a one-minute tourbillon with single-sided carriage. Enhancements include a dual-bodied anchor for more precise adjustments and a newly engineered shockproof spring for effortless mounting—both aimed at boosting accuracy and reliability. The introduction of a robust steel bridge further elevates the performance, creating a striking interplay between aesthetics and mechanical function.
The intricately crafted dial is a sight to behold. Featuring a sleek black ceramic surface that rests atop a dark gray, givre-finished base, the dial presents a harmonious blend of modern materials and timeless elegance. The polished disc of black zirconium oxide ceramic is laser-engraved with scales and numerals, while pike hands filled with HyCeram glide smoothly, ensuring clarity at a glance. Not only does this dial exude sophistication, but its scratch-resistant properties showcase Lang & Heyne’s expertise in using advanced materials.
At the heart of the watch is a stunning hand-wound manufacture movement, which beats at 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour (2.5 Hz) and boasts a 55-hour power reserve. The Caliber IX features an exquisite architecture and showcases sophisticated finishing techniques, highlighting the craftsmanship behind its design.
Adding to the charm of the "Manufaktur Edition" is the striking black onyx cabochon set in the large onion crown of the platinum case that has a diameter of 40 x 32mm and a height 9.4mm. Each piece in this limited series of five is individually numbered, with "1/5" engraved on the movement—a true mark of craftsmanship and rarity.
The price for the Anton in platinum is set at €160,000 (excluding taxes) or $174,803 when converted to USD.
