This WatchTime Spotlight falls on Zenith watches, specifically the Captain Grande Date Moonphase, a Zenith watch that offers two complications in its movement. In this article from our print archives, WatchTime goes past the elegant exterior to see how well it works. This Zenith watch uses a conventional moon-phase display, but has an outsize date with concentric disks that is very easy to reset. The Captain Grande Date Moonphase, like many Zenith watches, boasts a manufacture movement; and as with other Zenith watches, you don’t have to spend a year’s salary to own one. What can Zenith watch enthusiasts expect for this price? This classically designed timepiece, with a moon-phase dial and alligator strap, offers versatility – a Zenith watch as appropriate for an evening out as for an ordinary workday. The Captain Grande Date Moonphase has two complications, including a “Grande Date,” one of this Zenith watch’s most useful functions. Rather than relying on overlapping disks, as do many other big-date displays, it uses coplanar, concentric disks, with the inner one fitting into the outer one’s hollow center. The other complication is its distinctive Zenith moon-phase. The lunar display has a traditional cover plate with two lobes. Rays of guilloché decoration emanate from its center, and the motif is repeated on the second subdial. But this just scratches the lunar surface of this Zenith watch and its details!
