Hanhart Preventor HD12 Returns in a Compact 36mm Edition

Hanhart is taking its Preventor HD12 in a new direction with a more compact 36mm version. Created in collaboration with British watch enthusiast Russell, known as "MAD Watch Collector," the limited-edition model responds to repeated demand for a smaller Preventor while retaining the robust design and technical character of the larger watch. Limited to 200 pieces, the new edition combines a Schwarzwald-green dial with Hanhart’s specially hardened HD12 steel.

A Particularly Hard Material
One of the defining features of the Preventor HD12 is the material used for its case. Hanhart’s HD12 steel can reach a surface hardness of up to 1,200 Vickers (HV), compared with roughly 220 HV for conventional 316L stainless steel. The result is substantially greater resistance to scratches while retaining the corrosion resistance expected from stainless steel. This hardness is achieved through a multi-stage treatment rather than relying solely on a conventional surface coating. First, carbon is diffused into the stainless steel, creating a gradual transition between the hardened outer layer and the softer core. A transparent hard-material PVD coating is then added for further protection.
Measuring 36mm in diameter, 10.5mm in height and 43mm from lug to lug, the new Preventor HD12 adopts more traditional proportions without losing its presence on the wrist. At Russell’s suggestion, Hanhart has retained the 20mm lug width of the larger model, allowing the watch to accommodate a broad range of straps. The case features a smooth bezel, a screw-down crown bearing Hanhart’s historic “h” and a screwed case back. Water resistance is rated to 15 bar, or 150 meters.

The matte Schwarzwald-green dial is protected by a convex, anti-reflective sapphire crystal and pays tribute to Hanhart’s roots in Germany’s Black Forest. The historic Hanhart logo, clear Arabic numerals and cathedral-style hands provide a straightforward layout, while Superluminova C3 X2 GL on the numerals and hands ensures legibility in low-light conditions.

Sellita-Based Self-winding Movement
At the heart of the MAD Preventor HD12 is the Hanhart-regulated Sellita SW 200-1 automatic movement, with a power reserve of 38 hours and a stop-seconds function for precise time setting. The movement which works behind a closed case back dispenses with a date display, resulting in a straightforward hours, minutes and central seconds configuration. Hanhart regulates each movement to an accuracy of 0 to +8 seconds per day, averaged across six positions.
The Hanhart Preventor HD12 is priced at €1,140 or approximately $1,320 on a calfskin strap, or €1,340 respectively $1,550 on the bracelet.
