When Citizen announced the relaunch of its Series 8 collection at the start of 2021, the watches that composed it quickly caught the attention of the market with their striking looks, utility-driven design, and excellent build quality. Following that success and marking the first anniversary of the relaunch of Citizen’s Series 8 collection, the brand has introduced a limited edition, all-black model that remains as functional as it is elevated. The new Series 8 870 Mechanical First Anniversary Limited Edition Model is a monochromatic, sporty take on the growing Series 8 collection.

Characterized by sharp lines and an uncluttered layout, the 40.8mm steel model is distinguished with its chic angles and refined execution. The sleek watch sits 11.4mm high on the wrist and features a two-piece bezel finished with Duratect DLC, a proprietary surface hardening coating developed by Citizen. Notably, Duratect assists in keeping the surface of the watch free from scratches while maintaining the glossiness of the finish. The modern and dynamic styling of the Series 8 collection combined with the versatile black colorway help make this timepiece a keen all-around wearer, helping you easily transition from work to weekend and everything included.

In addition to its all-black case, also making its debut in the Series 8 collection via this model is the lightweight and durable carbon material used for the dial's construction. The material is the same as that used in aircraft and high-performance sports cars, being valued for its incredible strength for its weight. The dial from watch to watch differs in its appearance due to the nature of the material, making each of the new anniversary models unique from one another and lending to their attractive pattern that charmingly changes in various lighting conditions.

Resting on the incredible display are sharp, applied indices matching the style of the case. A date window provides some daily utility at the 3 o'clock position, while a pair of matching, lume-filled hands sweep over top to showcase the running time. Simple in essence but embodying a dynamic edginess that is characteristic of the Series 8 collection, the dial highlights a refined sportiness in monochromatic splendor.

Powering the 870 is the Citizen caliber 0950. The automatic movement features enhanced magnetic resistance that helps lend to it an average accuracy of -5 to +10 seconds daily. The mechanism also offers up to 50 hours of running time when fully wound. Also notably separating this model from its predecessors is its novel sapphire caseback, with the feature making its debut in the Series 8 collection and showcasing the watch's finely finished movement and stylized rotor.
