Grand Seiko Expands Its Classic GMT Line with Two New Variants

The Elegance Collection welcomes two fresh interpretations of Grand Seiko’s sought-after mechanical GMT, pairing familiar lines with refined, nature-inspired dial textures.

For more than 15 years, the Mechanical GMT from Grand Seiko’s Elegance Collection has been a cornerstone of the brand’s portfolio. Introduced in 2010, the SBGM221 quickly became a favorite thanks to its ivory dial, blued GMT hand, and understated design language. Now Grand Seiko introduces two new references, the SBGM255 Snowdrop and SBGM257 Moondrop, which retain the classic styling while presenting it through the lens of new patterns and tonal atmospheres.

Both models are housed in a 39.5mm stainless-steel case defined by clean curves and mirror-like surfaces finished using Grand Seiko’s sophisticated Zaratsu polishing technique. Slightly angled lugs emphasize the precision of the casework, while the box-shaped sapphire crystal adds a subtle vintage note reminiscent of 1960s timepieces. As true GMT watches, the hour hand can be adjusted independently, allowing for seamless time-setting while traveling.

A contemporary, geometric spiral motif shapes the dials and introduces a lively play of light and shadow. The SBGM255 Snowdrop captures the sparkle of dew and early spring snow. Its white dial forms a crisp backdrop for the blued GMT hand and matching blue 24-hour scale. The SBGM257 Moondrop offers a deeper, more atmospheric palette. The navy-blue dial evokes autumn nights touched by moonlight, accented by a gold GMT hand and gold-toned 24-hour markers that add warmth and elegance. On both versions, the hands and indexes are diamond-cut and hand-polished for clarity and precision, a hallmark of Grand Seiko’s craftsmanship. A date display at 3 o’clock completes the layout.

Inside the SBGM255 and SBGM257 beats the automatic caliber 9S66, manufactured at the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offering a comfortable power reserve of 72 hours, the movement combines modern hairspring technology with a MEMS-engineered escapement for stability and accuracy.
