Today, Peacock — one of China’s most historic watchmaking manufactures — is presenting its own take on the complication at the $5,000 threshold with the launch of the Avant Series Black Hole III Curved Guilloché Central Tourbillon.
Marking Peacock’s 70th anniversary, this piece is far more than a technical exercise in high-complication movement layout. It represents a bold visual thesis, turning abstract astrophysics into tangible métiers d’art, where light, geometry, and mechanical kinetic art collide on a three-dimensional plane.
The Architectural Concept: Mechanics as Cosmic Singularity
At first glance, the Black Hole III abandons traditional horological symmetry in favor of orbital motion. Peacock’s new Avant Series Black Hole transforms the invisible architecture of the cosmos into a work of mechanical art. At its heart sits a self-developed central free-sprung tourbillon, evoking the singularity of a cosmic black hole. Concentric hour and minute markers orbit this central vortex like planetary matter drawn into an event horizon.
Framing this central kinetic spectacle is a dial executed with unusual technical rigor, using a hand-crafted curved guilloché pattern Peacock calls the “Gravitational Weave.” Inspired by the warped spacetime continuum surrounding a gravitational singularity, the V-shaped engine-turned grooves gradually contract toward the center, creating an optical illusion of space collapsing inward under immense force.
Spacetime Woven by Hand: Breaking the Flat Engine-Turning Plane
Traditional guilloché — as practiced by Breguet or Kari Voutilainen — relies on a predictable, two-dimensional flat gold or silver plate. Engraving a curved, concave three-dimensional dish introduces additional mechanical friction and geometric complexity. Every stroke of the engraving tool moves simultaneously through the X, Y, and Z axes as the surface rises and falls beneath the cutter.
To accomplish what it calls Spacetime Woven by Hand, Peacock developed custom-adapted engine-turning equipment capable of navigating variable-depth trajectories. The numbers behind the “Gravitational Weave” speak to the level of manual discipline involved:
- 240 interlocking V-grooves. There are 120 running clockwise and 120 counterclockwise across a three-dimensional parabolic contour.
- 1,440 precision passes. Each individual V-groove requires six separate manual engraving passes to achieve structural depth and crisp optical reflections.
- 3-degree geometric angle. Every cut opens at an exact 3-degree angle, a deliberate geometric reference to three-dimensional space.
- Hand-matting finishing. After cutting, the metal undergoes manual brushing with abrasive media to create a velvety, non-reflective matte sheen that catches ambient light at changing wrist angles without glaring.
According to Peacock, curved guilloché also requires the artisan to continuously adjust pressure and blade-entry angle as the engraving tool moves across the changing surface, meaning even a small error can ruin the component.
Flame-Blued Titanium and Micro-Engineering
Forged in lightweight Grade 5 titanium, the Black Hole III’s concentric hour and minute discs demand exceptional control due to titanium’s low thermal conductivity, rapid tool wear, and tight machining tolerances. After extended CNC milling, Peacock applies femtosecond “cold” laser processing — adapted from semiconductor and medical technology — to create intricate hollow structures with micron-level precision.
Each disc is then progressively refined by hand, with every edge and surface carefully balanced. The result combines precise machining with patient hand-finishing.
The Grade 5 titanium inner ring is individually flame-blued by hand at temperatures between 550 and 600 degrees Celsius. Rather than relying on a chemical PVD coating, Peacock creates its blue-violet coloration through controlled thermal oxidation.
On the ring’s complex three-dimensional parabolic surface, heat must move continuously by hand. Even subtle changes in distance, angle, or temperature can alter the final hue, meaning each piece emerges with a slightly different color signature.
In-House Movement Architecture: Caliber PAX9611A
Inside is Peacock’s hand-wound caliber PAX9611A. Measuring 35.6mm in diameter and a surprisingly slim 3.5mm thick, the architecture packs 196 components around a central tourbillon cage weighing just 0.46 grams.
Despite the substantial energy load required to drive both a central tourbillon and two perimeter display discs, Peacock engineered a four-barrel series architecture delivering a 120-hour, or five-day, power reserve with a claimed transmission efficiency of more than 95%.
The free-sprung balance wheel incorporates four internal Gyromax-style micro-regulating weights, allowing fine regulation without disturbing the hairspring geometry.
