Wild Blue Wanderer: Bulgari Ushers in a Return to Travel with New Aluminium GMT

Alongside the bevy of high-complication and high-jewelry timepieces it launched last year, Bulgari revived its 1990s sport-luxury watch, the Bulgari Aluminium. This year, ahead of the Italian jeweler-watchmaker’s participation in next week’s Geneva Watch Days event, it introduces a new version of the Aluminium targeted at those anxious to emerge from pandemic lockdowns and start traveling again. Here is the new Bulgari Aluminium GMT.

Like its predecessors, including the Steve Aoki Special Edition unveiled earlier this year, the Aluminium GMT is noteworthy for its combination of an aluminum case (“aluminium” being the preferred spelling of the lightweight metal in Europe), a rubber bezel with the engraved iconic double “BVLGARI,” and an integrated rubber strap. The bezel, strap, and dial are predominantly in blue; on the latter, two central hands display the local time on the 12-hour scale, while a third red-tipped hand indicates the home time on the bicolor 24-hour outer scale, whose blue and red sectors distinguish between night and day.

The aluminum case measures 40 mm in diameter and sports a crown and a caseback made of titanium. Inside the case, which is water-resistant to 100 meters, is a self-winding movement, Bulgari’s Caliber B192, with a 42-hour power reserve. The dial’s hands and hour markers are coated with Super-LumiNova. The blue rubber strap features aluminum links and an aluminum pin buckle.

The Bulgari Aluminium GMT is priced at $3,500.

You have reviewed a couple nice GMT watches in the past few days. It would be very helpful if you would always mention whether these are true traveler’s watches with an independent hour hand for resetting the time when crossing time zones; or a “desk diver” GMT with the hour hand linked to the GMT hand. This is an important purchase consideration.
