CELEBRATING 70 YEARS OF PORSCHE SPORTS CARS

Video Exclusive: Porsche Design 1919 70Y Porsche Sports Car Limited Edition

In 1948 — 70 years ago — Porsche rolled out the Porsche 356, the German marque’s first production automobile and the predecessor to the legendary Porsche 911. The new Porsche Design 1919 70Y Porsche Sports Car Limited Edition — which premiered at our WatchTime Rodeo Drive event last week and cruises into select retailers this month — commemorates that anniversary in the distinctive, stylish fashion we’ve come to expect from the Porsche Design Studio, the purveyor of watches and other luxury accessories founded by the 911’s inventor, Ferdinand A. Porsche.

The Porsche Design 1919 70Y celebrates the 70th anniversary of Porsche sports cars.

The watch, which is limited to 1,948 pieces, springs from Porsche Design’s 1919 Eternity collection, which debuted in 2016 and was designed with both Bauhaus simplicity and vintage Porsche automobile elements in mind. Its 42-mm case is made of titanium, with a matte black titanium carbide coating; the minimalist black dial, which has become emblematic of Porsche Design timepieces, features central hours, minutes and seconds hands in white, a date window at 3 o’clock, and ceramic Arabic numerals and hour indices inserted into the dial’s shaped, milled recesses. Distinguishing this model from its peers in the Eternity collection are the tachymeter-inspired rings around the dial that echo those on the dashboard of the Porsche 356; the silhouette of the vintage car and “1948” text above the 6 o’clock position, and the engraved “70 Years” logo on the solid steel caseback.

A special “70 Years” engraving, plus the watch’s limited edition number, appears on the caseback.

Under that caseback, which also features the watch’s limited edition number (“xxxx/1948”) beats the Swiss-made automatic Sellita SW 200 caliber, customized with the Porsche Design brand’s matte-black titanium carbide “Icon” rotor and storing a power reserve of 38 hours. The strap, attached to the case by Porsche Design’s characteristic open-design lugs, is made of high-quality leather of the type used in the seats of Porsche sports cars, according to the company. Each watch comes in a custom box with a special badge marking the timepiece as a limited edition. Priced at $3,248, it is available now at Porsche Design Stores, Porsche Centers, specialty retailers, and online at www.porsche-design.com.
