Two New Panerai Watches Feature Linear Equation-of-Time Function

Panerai PAM00601 - dial CUPanerai added a new complication to its lineup at SIHH 2015, and it did so in a very Panerai way: the brand’s first Equation of Time function debuts in both a new Radiomir 1940 and Luminor 1950 watch, represented on the dial by a linear scale. Scroll down to read more on the new watches, both of which boast an eight-day power reserve.

The equation of time, a sophisticated astronomical complication that measures the difference between mean time and solar time (and explained in more detail here), is the signature function of Panerai’s new P.2002/E caliber, a manual-winding movement based on Caliber P.2002, the brand’s first in-house movement that debuted in 2005. The movement, with a diameter of 13 3/4 lignes, stores a power reserve of eight days in its three spring barrels.

Caliber P.2002/E powers both new Panerai watches, the Panerai Radiomir 1940 Equation of Time 8 Days Acciaio (PAM00516), with a 48-mm case, and the Panerai Luminor 1950 Equation of Time 8 Days Acciaio (PAM 00601), with a 47-mm case. Both watches have black dials in Panerai’s well-known “sandwich”-style construction. The linear equation-of-time indicator is positioned above the 6 o’clock position (the spot in which you’d find the linear power-reserve display on some other Panerai watches with eight-day movements); the small seconds subdial is at 9 o’clock, and the month (on a subdial) and date (in a window) are on display at 3 o’clock.

Both cases are made of polished 316L stainless steel and water-resistant to approximately 100 meters. The case of the Luminor 1950 (which is an evolution of the original, historical Radiomir case) features another Panerai hallmark, the distinctive bridge device with clamping lever to protect the winding crown. The casebacks have sapphire viewing windows that offer a view of Caliber P.2002/E, and specifically the power-reserve display, which has been moved here due to its traditional spot being occupied by the equation-of-time indication on the dial.

The Panerai Radiomir 1940 Equation of Time 8 Days Acciaio – 48 mm is a limited edition of only 200 pieces, and the Panerai Luminor 1950 Equation of Time 8 Days – 47 mm is even more limited, to just 100 pieces. Both timepieces are fitted with an alligator strap (black for the Radiomir, brown for the Luminor); the Luminor 1950 is also supplied with a screwdriver and a tool for changing straps.

This Panerai would have looked so much cooler with their usual crown assembly…
