The White Sands of Time: Hublot Launches Classic Fusion Eden Rock Limited Editions for Him and Her

Among its many collaborations and partnerships, Hublot last year worked with the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cap d’Antibes, France, to create a special limited-edition timepiece, and followed up the exotic sun-and-sand theme with another special edition celebrating the Isle of Capri at the opening of the Swiss brand’s boutique there. This week, Hublot rolled out the latest ultra-exclusive watches born of its partnership with the Oetker Collection of luxury hotels, both inspired by the legendary Eden Rock de Saint Barthélemy. For men, the maison offers the Classic Fusion Aerofusion Chronograph Eden Rock, with a skeletonized chronograph caliber; for ladies, its the Classic Fusion Eden Rock, a three-hand with diamond-set bezel and ruby indices.

The watches, both of which are limited to only 25 pieces, were launched concurrently with the grand reopening of the Eden Rock, a destination for numerous celebrities and luminaries since its founding in the 1950s, which this fall completed a major renovation after being devastated by Hurricane Irma in 2017. Present at the VIP launch party at the Eden Rock St. Barth’s for the new pieces were Hublot CEO Ricardo Guadalupe and Olympic sprinter and “fastest man alive,” longtime Hublot ambassador Usain Bolt, who hails from the nearby Caribbean island of Jamaica. The watches, which will initially be available only at the hotel and eventually at choice Hublot boutiques, are both notable for their dazzling white colorways, echoing the white sands of the beaches at St. Barth’s and the sun-bleached walls of the property, and the touch of “Eden Rock red” that highlights the dials and straps of the watches.

The Classic Fusion Aerofusion Chronograph Eden Rock, features a 45-mm case made of polished and satin-brushed titanium; its emblematic porthole bezel is punctuated by the eight specialized H-shaped screws that Hublot (which literally translates to “porthole”) has made famous. The sapphire dial has polished, rhodium-plated hour appliqués and hands, along with subdials at 9 and 3 o’clock, the latter sporting a subtle “Eden Rock St. Barth’s” emblem. In full view beneath that clear dial is the movement, Hublot’s automatic, skeletonized HUB1155 caliber, which beats at 28,800 vph, stores a 42-hour power reserve, and drives a date display at 6 o’clock along with the chronograph function. The movement is also visible through a sapphire window in the titanium caseback, which has an engraved limited edition number and can be personalized for its owner.

Smaller in size and simpler in its functionality, the Classic Fusion Eden Rock for ladies has its own type of appeal. The titanium case, which measures 38 mm in diameter and just shy of 10 mm in thickness, is set with 36 brilliant-cut diamonds (1.16 cts), while its white lacquered dial uses 10 rubies as hour markers, with the 12 o’clock spot marked by an applied Eden Rock “ER” logo, and the 3 o’clock position occupied by a date window. Inside the case, and in display behind the engraved caseback, is the automatic Caliber HUB1100, which is based on a Sellita SW 300-1 and offers a 42-hour power reserve.

Both of the Eden Rock limited editions are available with three straps: one in white alligator leather with red rubber lining and red topstitching, and two in full finely ribbed rubber, one each in white and red. All attach to the wrist with a stainless steel deployant clasp. The Classic Fusion Aerofusion Chronograph Eden Rock retails for $18,700, the Classic Fusion Eden Rock for $15,800.

Hublot is just one of those brands I just don’t get and represents everything that is wrong with the Swiss watch industry right now. How can a watch with either a ETA2892 or Sellita SW-300 base be charging $18,000 or $15,000 US ?
It’s just not on, and these movements can be found in watches costing 1/10th of the price. To me Hublot is a product of marketing only (John Claude Biver) and has no substance. You would never accept this kind of movement in a Rolex or Grand Seiko.
