TAG Heuer Launches the Next Generation of Turbocharged Carrera Chronographs (With Live Photos)

Thus far in 2020, Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer has commemorated its 160th anniversary with the launch of two limited-edition models, the Carrera Silver Limited Edition and the Montreal Limited Edition. This week, crowning its yearlong celebration, the brand reveals four new models that will join its “evergreen” collection. The TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre Heuer 02 takes TAG Heuer’s iconic 1963 racing chronograph, the Carrera, and “reimagines” it with subtle design updates and an expanded 80-hour power reserve.

According to TAG Heuer, the new models, launching over two collections in two distinctive styles (the second set to debut in September), will “take [this] collection back to its roots.” Said roots go back to the Carrera’s creator, then-CEO Jack Heuer, and his well-documented love of motorsport design that informed the original, now classic model. The iconic watch was Jack Heuer’s “proudest creation,” according to the brand, designed to be “perfect for drivers who need to see the time at a glance during races.”

The stainless steel cases for each new edition boast alternating brushed and polished finishes, with shorter lugs than their predecessors, contributing to a sleeker appearance; they measure 44 mm in diameter (one mm larger than their predecessors with the Heuer 02 movement, i.e., Ref. CBG2010.BA0662). For the watch’s tachymeter bezel, three models use colored ceramic, in black or blue, while the fourth uses silvered steel. All four models have a screw-down sapphire caseback that helps ensure the watch’s water-resistance to 100 meters.

The satin-finished dial, sporting the vintage Heuer logo (sans “TAG”) at 12 o’clock and the “Carrera Heuer 02 80 Hours” inscription at 6 o’clock, uses rhodium-plated applied indexes and hour and minute hands; the hands are coated in white Super-LumiNova and have black lacquer applied to their edges. The beveled flange and indexes slant toward the center of the dial for “undistracted reading [of the time] at a glance.” The chronograph minute counter at 3 o’clock and hour counter at 9 o’clock have an azurage motif in the dial’s corresponding color, while the running seconds subdial counter at 6 o’clock bears an opaline finish; within this subdial is a small aperture for the date. Another subtle detail: the 9 o’clock hour counter now uses Arabic numerals for the 12, 4, and 8.

The most noteworthy model in the new Carrera collection is the black-and-rose-gold model pictured above (Ref. CBN2A5A.FC6481). Its black ceramic bezel is filled with rose-gold-colored lacquer – a first for TAG Heuer – and the crown and pushers are made from solid 18k rose gold. The oscillating weight of the movement, visible through its sapphire crystal caseback, is fashioned from black PVD coated brass with rose gold printing.

That movement, the aforementioned Caiber Heuer 02, comprises 168 components, including a column wheel and a vertical clutch for the stopwatch mechanism, and boasts an impressive power reserve of 80 hours.

The first three models come mounted on steel H-shaped-link bracelets with steel folding clasp equipped with double safety push-buttons. The black-and-rose-gold model fastens to the wrist with a classic black leather strap. The new watches will be available exclusively in TAG Heuer boutiques (also online in selected countries) in July 2020 and will retail between $5,350 – $20,400.
