Summertime Blue: Hublot Big Bang Unico Summer Shines in Turquoise Aluminum Case

Since its founding, and particularly in recent years, Hublot has been on the cutting edge of both unusual colorways and avant-garde materials. Now, inspired by the promise of a vibrant, post-Covid-19 summer, the Nyon-based manufacture remains true to this calling card with the Big Bang Unico Summer, a festive, monochromatic timepiece featuring a turquoise-blue case made of anodized aluminum.

The anodization process used to apply the lagoon-inspired, pastel color to the 42-mm case (considered a “unisex” size by Hublot) imparts it exceptional, long-lasting resistance to scratches and impacts; its combination of polished and satin finishes ensure that it shimmers appealingly in the sunlit and often tropical conditions that its design is intended to evoke. Made of aluminum, it’s also extremely light on the wrist, and features the familiar Big Bang Unico elements, including the bezel with six H-shaped screws, the fluted. screwed crown with “H” engraving, and ergonomic buttons to operate the watch’s chronograph function.

The skeletonized dial, with turquoise-blue details including the hands, subdials, hour numerals and minute track, offers a view of Hublot’s self-winding Unico Caliber HUB1280. The in-house movement’s noteworthy attributes include a 72-hour power reserve, a 4-Hz frequency, an oscillating seconds clutch, a chronograph friction system with ball-bearing adjustment and a column wheel that’s on display on the dial side. The hands and numerals have white and turquoise luminous coating to keep track of the time, if the wearer so chooses, on those lazy summer nights.

The movement, including its skeletonized rotor, is also visible through a sapphire window in the caseback, which is the only major part of the watch made of satin-brushed titanium rather than anodized aluminum. Both the movement and case are uncommonly thin for a Big Bang — 6.75 mm and 14.5 mm thick, respectively, adding to the watch’s comfort on the wrist. The case is equipped with Hublot’s patented “One Click” system, which allows easy interchangeability of the two provided straps — one Velcro, the other natural rubber, both matching the summery hue of the case and dial details. The closures on each strap are also made of turquoise-colored anodized aluminum, with lacquered white Hublot logos.

The Hublot Big Bang Unico Summer is limited to 200 pieces, priced at $20,900, and will initially be available for purchase exclusively on Hublot’s e-commerce site and at the brand’s Mediterranean boutiques in Capri, Forte dei Marmi, Mykonos, Ibiza, Bodrum, Saint-Tropez, and Monaco.

You might be able to tell I don’t like Hublot and never have. This design is reminiscent of a ,Casio G Shock -Baby G. There are just so many better ways to spend $20K US. A Rolex Daytona would put this watch to shame and you would have plenty of change …..
