Showing at WatchTime New York 2017: Glashütte Original Senator Chronograph Panorama Date

America’s luxury watch show, WatchTime New York, is just a month away, and Germany’s Glashütte Original will be one of the 30 sponsoring watch brands showing their wares at Gotham Hall on October 13-14. Among its highlight pieces will be the new Senator Chronograph Panorama Date in stainless steel, unveiled at Baselworld 2017.

The Glashütte Original Senator Chronograph Panorama Date, which is equipped with Glashütte Original’s recently introduced in-house Caliber 37, debuted in 2014 in both a rose-gold and platinum case (we review the rose-gold model here), and is joined by a new steel model this year. The watch’s deep black dial features high-contrast white print, and its hands, applied indices, and applied Roman numerals at 6 and 12 o’clock — all made of white gold — are treated with a bright blue-tinted Super-LumiNova for superior nighttime legibility (see below). The watch’s namesake panorama date, a hallmark of this Saxon luxury brand, appears in the lower half of the dial, beneath the chronograph counters and small seconds display, the latter of which also incorporates a power-reserve indication.

Inside the 42-mm steel case, which offers alternating polished and satin-brushed finishes, is Glashütte Original’s manufacture Caliber 37, with a fully integrated flyback function and controlled by a column wheel. Among the movement’s technical innovations is its one-part lever, which makes for more secure switching and reduces the susceptibility to errors; a space-saving coupling clutch that uses an oscillating pinion; and four gold screws on the balance wheel, in place of a traditional regulator, for more precise adjustment. Fully wound, it stores an impressive power reserve of 70 hours.

The watch, whose new screw-down crown helps ensure its water resistance to 100 meters, is offered with three distinctly different bracelets: black calfskin with blue stitching that matches the dial’s blue luminous highlights; black rubber with a lightly textured, laser-cut decoration; and an easily adjustable, polished and satin-brushed stainless steel bracelet.
