Panerai first dipped its toes into e-commerce in 2017, with the release of a limited-edition model in its Submersible collection (then called Luminor Submersible), with the first 30 of 100 pieces offered to online customers. Today, Panerai takes it to the next level, with another special-edition Submersible — this one with all 500 of its pieces available exclusively via the brand’s e-commerce site. Here’s a look at the Panerai Submersible Verde Militare – 42 MM, which also happens to be the first-ever Submersible with a green dial.
The watch, tagged with the reference number PAM01055), features a 42-mm case made of brushed AISI 316L stainless steel, equipped with both a unidirectional rotating bezel with a relief dive scale and the proprietary bridge-shaped, safety-locking crown protector to secure the screw-down crown (and thus, the case’s 300-meter water resistance). Both elements are hallmarks of Panerai Luminor and Submersible watches, and hearken back to Panerai’s origins as a provider of tactical timepieces to Italian naval divers.
The dark, military green dial is one never before seen on a Submersible, with luminous-coated indices and hands that glow bright blue-green in the dark or deep underwater. The subdial at 9 o’clock ticks away the running seconds while the date reveals itself in a small window at 3 o’clock. A sapphire crystal obtained from corundum covers the dial, while behind it ticks an in-house movement, Panerai’s automatic Caliber P.900, which boasts a three-day (72 hour) power reserve, in a single spring barrel, when fully wound. The movement, used previously in several Luminor Due models, was designed to be as thin as possible (just 4.2 mm) while still providing the three-day power supply and a date indication. The use of the P.900 allows the case to be accordingly restrained in its thickness (14.37 mm).
The Submersible Verde Militare – 42MM — “Verde” is “green” in Italian, the mother tongue of Panerai, which was born in Florence — is mounted on a green rubber strap that matches the dial and closes with a trapezoidal clasp in brushed steel. An additional NATO-style strap, made of water-resistant technical cloth with a velcro closure and titanium loops, also comes with each watch, along with special tools for removing and replacing the straps and buckles. This online-only model is priced at $8,700.
