Mühle Glashütte Dips into Bronze with a New Yacht-Timer

In the past five years, bronze has become more prevalent than ever in the watch industry. It’s come to the point where any brand looking to change things up turns to the centuries-old material for inspiration. That’s not a bad thing. Bronze provides an intimate charisma, through the development of patina, that other case materials lack. Additionally, bronze timepieces are inherently photogenic and add a layer of increased virility that softer metals don’t always have. Announced earlier this week, Mühle Glashütte, a favorite brand of teutophile watch collectors everywhere, has introduced a never-before-seen Yacht-Timer constructed from aluminium bronze.

Blue dominates the textile strap, dial, and bidirectional bezel before departing onto the bronze tone that forms the entirety of the case (sans the caseback, formed from stainless steel with a transparent crystal). The 44 mm timepiece maintains classic Mühle elements including blocky hands; the arrow-style indexes (known as orientation triangles) at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock that provide enhanced legibility; and an extra-thick crystal at 2.5 mm that is scratch resistant, shatterproof, and contains anti-glare properties. The watch also boasts water resistance to 300 meters.

Inside the 44 mm watch is a modified Sellita SW 200-1 automatic movement with Mühle’s patented woodpecker neck regulation, a brand-selected rotor, and characteristic surface finishes. It has a 38-hour power reserve and allows for stop seconds and quick date adjustment.

Although this isn’t the first Mühle timepiece to venture into bronze territory (check out last year’s S.A.R. Rescue Timer), the Yacht-Timer in bronze wears its nautical aspirations on its sleeve and provides a tremendous value when viewed next to comparable bronze dive watches from the brand’s Swiss counterparts. The Mühle Glashütte Yacht-Timer in bronze is limited to 500 total pieces and is priced at $2,950.

Nice watch but that crown, definitely, does not harmonize with the rest.
