The watch world’s new Bronze Age marches on, with yet another divers’ watch emerging in a new case made of bronze, a metal historically used in maritime equipment due to its anti-corrosive properties. The latest timepiece outfitted in the material is a retro-look timepiece from Longines’ Heritage collection, the Legend Diver, which pairs up the bronze case with a sea-green lacquered dial.
The Longines Legend Diver, which joined the collection in 2007, is a modern re-issue of a divers’ watch Longines produced in 1960, Its 42-mm stainless steel case replicates the lines of the original and is notable for its two crowns — one for winding the watch, the other for operating the internal rotating divers’ bezel. Both these crowns, as well as the caseback, are screwed, helping to ensure a water resistance level of 300 meters. The inner rotating bezel, which serves as the flange of the watch, can also be locked in place by its dedicated crown, thus ensuring that a diver wearing it knows exactly how long he has been underwater.
Under a box-shaped sapphire crystal, the lacquered dial has a gradient effect, with emerald green at the center radiating to black at the outer edge. It is punctuated by indices, numerals, and hands coated with Super-LumiNova; the 12, 3, 6, and 9 Arabic numerals are executed in clear, blocky typography for maximum legibility. Super-LumiNova has also been applied to the square and rectangular markers aligned with the hour indices as well as the hour and minute hands.
Inside the watch, under a solid titanium caseback with an engraving of a diver, ticks the movement, the automatic Caliber L883.3 (a modified ETA A31.L02 produced exclusively for Longines), with 21 jewels, a balance frequency of 25,200 vph, and a power reserve of 65 hours. The watch — which like all bronze-cased watches will develop its own individual patina after a period of wear — comes on a brown leather strap finished with a beige top-stitching. Also included is a green nylon NATO-style strap and a tool for easy changing of the two wristbands. The watch is priced is $3,000.
