Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin Launch New AMVOX7 Chronograph

Jaeger-LeCoultre Amvox7 on Aston-Martin Vanquish hoodIn 2005, Swiss watch brand Jaeger-LeCoultre joined with British car maker Aston Martin to produce the first AMVOX, ushering in JLC’s line of “vertical trigger” chronograph wristwatches. This year, the luxury brands join forces once more on the AMVOX7, the first model with a radial power-reserve display.

The AMVOX7 Chronograph, which commemorates the eighth anniversary of the partnership between Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin, features a new, more ergonomically designed case and modifications to the crown, lugs and strap that are also meant to ensure optimum wearer comfort.

Like the first AMVOX watch and all the others that followed it, the AMVOX7 has as its signature feature a chronograph mechanism that is operated not by side-mounted push-buttons but by simply pressing on the watch’s crystal. Pressing the top of the crystal near 12 0’clock starts and stops the chronograph, while pressing on the lower half of the glass resets it to zero. A trigger located on the side of the case prevents accidental engaging of the chronograph and serves as a control lever. In its central position, all the chronograph functions operate normally. In its upward position, it blocks the chronograph from activating, and in its lower position, it can either start and stop the chronograph or deactivate the resetting function.

The function making its debut in this model is the radial power reserve display, which appears through two apertures in the upper part of the inner bezel ring on either side of the dial. As the watch is wound, the two red disks draw closer to the numeral “12” and as the power winds down (the watch has a power reserve of approximately 65 hours), they gradually withdraw to reveal the chronograph levers behind them.

The black, openworked dial bears the design influence of Aston Martin, with a radiator grille motif that echoes that of the Vanquish, the model introduced by Aston Martin in June 2011. The chronograph counters are in anthracite gray, contrasting with the white hands and numerals. The central chronograph seconds hand and the chronograph hour and minute indicators sport a red lacquered finish.

The Aston Martin logo also appears on the inner bezel ring and as an engraving on the caseback. The case is made of grade 5 titanium and has lugs that are shaped in a monobloc construction for a more ergonomic fit on the wrist. The bevels on the lugs are meticulously polished; the crown and trigger have alternating shotpeened, polished and satin-brushed surfaces. The case middle and undersides of the lugs are horizontally satin-brushed. A new element on the caseback helps the calfksin leather strap maintain a curved shape meant to enhance wearing comfort. The watch features a quick-change system enabling the wearer to easily switch from the leather strap to a steel bracelet. Jaeger-LeCoultre has also modified the crown, which is now integrated into the case, for easier gripping and handling.

The “engine” at the heart of this automotive-inspired timepiece is Jaeger-LeCoultre’s automatic Caliber 756, which beats at a frequency of 28,800 vph and is made up of 335 parts, including 39 jewels. The price of the new AMVOX7 is $26,000.
