Into the Emerald Depths: TAG Heuer’s New Green-Dialed Aquaracers

TAG Heuer has played with a variety of materials and colors for its Aquaracer collection of sporty divers’ watches since the collection’s soft revamp in 2016, most recently and perhaps most notably 2018’s Aquaracer Carbon models. This year, two new Aquaracers debut — one for men, one for ladies — clad in of-the-moment emerald green dials, inspired, says the brand, “by the mesmerizing blue and green shades of the ocean.”

The stainless steel case of the Aquaracer Gents Green Dial boasts the stately 43-mm dimensions introduced in the 2016 models, up from the 41-mm size of their predecessors. The studded, 12-sided unidirectional rotating bezel features engraved numerals, filled with black lacquer, for the dive scale. The nonreflective sapphire crystal over the dial includes a magnifying lens over the date window at 3 o’clock. The green sunray-motif dial is enhanced with a horizontal line pattern meant to evoke the look of wooden docks at sailboat piers; its rhodium-plated indices and hands are treated with white Super-LumiNova, as is the 12 o’clock dot on the bezel, inside a black lacquered triangle. Inside the watch is TAG Heuer’s automatic Caliber 5, with a 28,800-vph frequency, a rapid date-correction function, and a power reserve of 38 hours. The Aquaracer’s professional-grade water-resistance to 300 meters (1,000 feet) is ensured by its screw-down crown and caseback, the latter of which is engraved with a divers’ helmet. The watch comes on a three-row stainless steel bracelet with polished and satin finishing; it includes a polished steel deployant buckle with safety push-buttons and a divers’ extension. It retails for $2,250.

Diamond indices appear at the hour positions on the Ladies model.

The verdant face of the Aquaracer Ladies Green Dial has the same sunray finish as the Gents model but instead of the wooden line pattern it features diamond indices at the hour markers. Its stainless steel case — also water-resistant to 300 meters and equipped with a rotating divers’ bezel, screwed crown and engraved caseback — measures a more feminine 32 mm, actually a bit smaller than the ceramic-cased, 35-mm references introduced in 2016. The hands are luminous-treated, the sapphire crystal (sans magnifying lens over the 3 o’clock date) is nonreflective, and the movement is Swiss quartz.  sapphire crystals. The steel bracelet includes all the features of the larger Gents model, including the divers’ extension. The watch is priced at $2,150.

Managed to get my hands on one. The UK were only provided with 25 and Tag currently have no intentions to put it back into production and are to keep it a limited edition, so those of you saying they have no resale value may well be wrong

  4. I am tired of snobs that treat watch as a house and expect it to increase in value. All consumables will lose value be it laptop phone or watch just buy no wear what you like or hush your mouth

    • I beg to differ. Try finding this watch for resale. It’s in such high demand that it’s either not available or is selling close to its srp.

Nice looking watch, clean and green. Not sure of the diamonds on the ladies version, would rather see a surface finish or pattern on the dial, looks like an afterthought to spice up the appearance..

The brand has done things to improve their image as of late, especially with the Autavia line but this hideous green dial is a step in the wrong direction in my opinion. St Patrick Day special perhaps.

Overall not a Green fan, be it Emerald or Sea Mist, but the Gents Caliber 5, I think can work, with the Decking concept of the Dial, which has some depth, the Ladies, for me is to evocative of the late ’90’s and the Brands ‘Fashion Period’ with Kirium and Alter Ego, where they lost their focus briefly, forgetting “Fashions change, Icon’s are constant.” I’d much prefer the Deep Blue, and it’s synergy with the depths of the sea. As with what was done with Autavia creating an extension of the Colledtion rather then going further into the Homage direction, the Brand would be better served, looking back at the Aquagraph, which never captured it’s true potential, by virtue of being but an Orphan piece in a single execution. The better solution is to merchandise around a Display and Retailer Collection where Aquagraph is offered in 5 Executions, SS, Titanium, Bronze, Black DLC and a Deep Blue DLC, the Blue w/ Panda White Superluminova Registers, all coming with Quick-Fit Rubber (Black, save for a matching Blue on the Blue), as well as either Bracelet or Leather.
