Germany Salutes France: Moritz Grossmann’s World Cup 2018 Football Watch

The 2018 World Cup in Russia concluded in dramatic fashion yesterday, with France defeating Croatia 4-2 to win the second World Cup in the country’s history. And in the spirit of international sporting goodwill, it is a German watch brand that has issued the very first special-edition timepiece in congratulation to the victorious French team. Here’s what you should know about the Moritz Grossmann Atum Pure Weltmeisteredition 2018.

The watch comes from Moritz Grossmann’s Atum Pure collection, characterized by elegantly curved, 41-mm stainless steel cases, with pushers below the crowns for hand-setting; prominent applied hour markers; and in-house-made, lancet-stye hands. In this model — which is limited to just six pieces, one for each goal scored in the championship match — the dial has an openworked filigree insert in the shape of a soccer ball (football or fussball, if you will), with “2018” and the final score “4-2” emblazoned on two of its five rounded edges. The red and blue colored inserts on the white hands are a visual tribute to France’s national colors.

Through the cutouts in the soccer-ball dial you can glimpse the movement, Caliber 201.1 — hand-wound, adjusted in five positions, and made in-house at the company’s atelier in the German watchmaking hub of Glashutte, in the state of Saxony. The movement is equipped with the Grossmann balance, the Grossmann winder with pusher, a modified Glashütte stopwork, a three-quarters mainplate made of untreated German silver, and the Grossmann micrometer screw, all elements typical of the brand and of hearken to the traditional Glashütte watchmaking pioneered by, among other luminaries, the company’s namesake, Moritz Grossmann (1826-1885). It also carries a power reserve of 42 hours when fully wound.
