Frozen Time: Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Beijing 2022 Ushers in Winter Olympic Games with Ice-Inspired Dial

With the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics postponed to this past July due to COVID-19, the countdown for the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing is already in the home stretch. As per its tradition as Official Olympic Timekeeper, Omega released a special-edition timepiece, marking one year to the start of the Games, back in February. Now, as we move within 100 days till the Opening Ceremonies in Beijing, Omega follows up that model with the Seamaster Aqua Terra Beijing 2022 edition, distinguished by an icy-white, textured ceramic dial meant to evoke the atmosphere of winter sports.

Framed inside the thin bezel of the 41-mm stainless steel case, and covered by a domed sapphire crystal, the dial has a frosted finish that calls to mind the snow-covered mountain peaks and icy expanses that host Olympic competitions such as skiing, bobsledding, speed skating, and ice hockey. The stark, chill-evoking aesthetic is emphasized by the blued hands and indices, which are also coated with Super-LumiNova. Red details, such as the numerals at the quarter-hour points on the minute track, and the classical “Seamaster” script beneath the blued Omega logo, provide a subtle warm contrast. A blue date numeral appears in an aperture at 6 o’clock.

Attached to a stainless steel three-link bracelet, the case has a solid back, with the scalloped edge characteristic of the Aqua Terra family, hosting a relief engraving of the Beijing 2022 logo. Behind the caseback ticks the Omega Co-Axial Master Chronometer Caliber 8900, an in-house automatic movement that meets the official chronometer standards of the Swiss testing agency COSC as well as the eight criteria of the Swiss METAS certification, including the ability to resist magnetic fields to a level of 15,000 gauss. It is equipped with Omega’s familiar co-axial escapement and its decorated rotor supplies two series-connected spring barrels with a 60-hour power reserve.

The Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Beijing 2022 is delivered in a special Olympic Games-themed presentation box and comes with a five-year warranty. It is available now, priced at $6,200.

This dial has been done before and far better executed in the Grand Seiko Snowflake….
