BASELWORLD 2017 PREVIEW:

Frédérique Constant Offers Redesigned Classic Worldtimer Manufacture

Frédérique Constant will release a new version of its Classic Worldtimer Manufacture travelers’ watch at Baselworld 2017 — containing the same in-house mechanical movement as the original but now in an elegant brown-and-rose-gold color scheme.

The new edition of the Frédérique Constant Classic Worldtimer Manufacture features a 42-mm case made of rose-gold-plated stainless steel. Its dial is etched with a world-map motif — surrounded by a 24-hour disk and a disk displaying 24 world cities representing the 24 major time zones — executed on this model in shades of brown. (Previous models of the Classic Worldtimer Manufacture have included both steel and gold-plated steel cases, and silvered and blue dials, some with guilloché patterns on the world map.) The date is displayed on a large subdial at 6 o’clock by a small hand, and the hours are marked by large, luminous dot indices. Both the three-part case, with convex sapphire crystal, and the gold-plated hour and minute hands have a sleek, polished finish.

The watch’s movement, automatic Caliber FC-718, was developed, produced, and assembled in-house at the brand’s manufacture outside of Geneva. It measures 30 mm in diameter and is composed of 139 parts; its balance beats at a frequency of 28,800 vph and it stores a power reserve of 42 hours. Haute horlogerie finishes on the movement, which is visible through a sapphire caseback, include perlage and côtes de Genève on the bridges and plates. Notably, the world-time function is controlled entirely by the crown, with no additional push-buttons or correctors needed. The first of the crown’s three positions allows the user to manually wind the watch by turning the crown upwards; the second is used to set the date and city by turning the crown upwards and downwards, respectively; and the third lets the user set the time by turning the crown downwards.

The Frédérique Constant Classic Worldtimer Manufacture (Ref. FC-718BRWM4H4) comes on a brown leather strap, with white contrast stitching, that harmonizes with the dial’s brown tones. Its price will be $4,195.
