Close-Up: Ball Engineer Master II Voyager

Ball Watch Co. has become known for its use of micro gas tubes to provide bright, long-lasting luminescence on its dials. The brand’s new Engineer Master II Voyager — a limited edition available for a short time at a special pre-order price — features the thinnest such tubes ever used on a Ball watch.

Offered in both 44-mm ands 40-mm case sizes, the Ball Engineer Master II Voyager features a dual time display, a big date indication, and a minute track made up of 60 micro gas tubes — at 0.3 mm x 2 mm in size, the thinnest the company has ever used on a dial. Along with the ones incorporated into the hour and minute hands, the watch has 74 micro gas tubes in total, all of which are self-powered and don’t require recharging from the sun or any other light source, and whose luminosity lasts for 25 years. Super-LumiNova is used for the additional luminous displays on the Arabic hour numerals and dual-time subdial.

The watch displays a second time zone in the subdial at 6 o’clock, which features both an hour and minute hand on a 12-hour scale for an easy, intuitive reading. The large date is in a double window at 12 o’clock. The case (both sizes) is in stainless steel, with a screw-down crown (for a 100-meter water-resistance) and nonreflective sapphire crystal. Inside the case is an automatic mechanical movement, Ball Caliber RR1301, based on the ETA 2892-A2. The movement is protected by Ball’s patented Amortiser anti-shock system, which absorbs external shocks to the case by means of an antimagnetic ring surrounding the movement. The watch is also shock-resistant to 5,000 Gs and can resist magnetic fields to 4,800 A/m thanks to a soft-iron inner shield.

Both the 40-mm and 44-mm models are available with a black or blue dial, and on either a steel bracelet or a calfskin strap. Limited to 1,000 pieces each, the watches offer the prospective buyer the opportunity to select his or her desired edition number. Simply enter the number when ordering online at Ball Watch’s online shop, and if it is available, you will have 15 minutes to complete payment. If it is not available, Ball will offer alternative numbers, or the opportunity to contact the company to request a specific one. Personal name engraving, up to 13 characters, is also an option offered. The Ball Engineer Master II Voyager is available now at a special pre-order price of $1,699 on a stainless steel bracelet and $1,659 on a leather strap. An additional NATO strap can be purchased for $65. (The full retail prices for the watch are $3,099 on bracelet and $2,999 on strap.) The limited-time offer ends on February 28th, 2017; pre-orders ship between May and June 2017.

I just received my 40mm today. The case is about 14mm by eyeball and scale, will measure more accurately later today. The caseback is slightly raised so there are no sharp edges on my ~6.5″ wrist. Also, I am looking forward to information about how to set the second time. zone dial. The Manual says: “Time setting: At position 3, the second hand is stopped. To set the time
for the Second Time Zone, turn the crown forwards until the correct time is
shown; both hour and minute hands of local and second time zone will
move when the crown is turned forward. Then, to set the Local Time, turn
the crown backwards. The second time zone hour hand will be locked at
the set time, only the minute hand will move to synchronize the time
setting of the local time zone. Push the crown back to position 1 after
setting.” also says not to reset between 9 and 3 so you don’t mess up the date setting.

How thick is the 40mm version of this watch? Is the caseback chamfered on the edges so it does not dig into my 6.5″ wrist? I wear a 42mm Weiss 6491 watch now and it has a very sharp edge on the caseback, which effects comfort in wearing it.

  4. If they had left the numbers off the dial, I’d call it a homerun. As it is, it’s a foul ball.
