Carl F. Bucherer Patravi ScubaTec Maldives Extends Partnership with Manta Trust

Carl F. Bucherer kicked off its partnership with the Manta Trust, a charitable organization devoted to preserving endangered Manta Rays and their ecosystems, in 2017 and the collaboration has produced its fourth specially dedicated timepiece this year. The Patravi ScubaTec Maldives, which was unveiled at Watches & Wonders back in April, is noteworthy for its blue wave-pattern dial, its partially recycled strap, and the charitable mission that its sales support: a floating research station established by the Manta Trust in the watch’s namesake archipelago.

The watch’s 44.6-mm case is made of stainless steel, with a unidirectional rotating bezel, made of the same metal, which incorporates scratch-resistant white and blue ceramic inserts with luminous coating on its 60-minute diving scale. The bright blue, finely textured dial hosts a decorative, lacquered wave pattern and bold applied markers coated with Super-LumiNova, a substance also applied to the openworked hour and minute hands and the tip of the central seconds hand. The date is in a window at 3 o’clock, and an automatic helium release valve in the side of the case protects the watch from damage from pressure changes when it is worn inside a diving bell. The screw-down crown and the thick sapphire crystal over the dial help secure the ScubaTec’s robust water resistance of 500 meters.

Inside the 13.45-mm-thick case, beating behind a solid back with a relief-engraved manta ray motif, is Carl F. Bucherer’s Caliber CFB 1950.1 caliber, a 25-jewel automatic movement with a 38-hour power reserve built on the reliable base of an ETA 2824-2. It boasts an official chronometer certification from the Contrôle Officiel Suisse de Chronomètres (COSC), attesting to its high level of precision. The watch is mounted on a blue rubber strap with a textile inlay made from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles removed from the ocean. The watch fastens to the wrist with a fine-adjusting folding clasp that can also extend to be worn comfortable over a diving suit.

The Carl F. Bucherer Patravi ScubaTec Maldives is available now, priced at $6,200. In keeping with the tradition of previous Patravi Scubatec timepieces made in cooperation with the Manta Trust, a portion of its proceeds will be donated to the nonprofit to support its new floating research station in the Maldives, which will allow a team of manta specialists “to conceptualize new strategies, devise plans, and brainstorm ideas for further research and conservation efforts” for the endangered manta population “not only in the Maldives but also on a more global scale.”

  1. I have wanted one of these for years. It is the 44.6mm case that has stopped me from purchasing. CFB must sell so many of these watches at this size that they are unwilling to open the market up to thousands of other customers who have smaller wrist. C’mon CFB you can make a 41mm.

This timepiece has always interested me in its various guises. It’s very well made and looks attractive. But there are two things I attach some importance to that I think detracts from the whole package for a prospective buyer.
    1. The power reserve of 38 hours is totally inadequate for today’s lifestyle as many people own more than one watch.

    2. A watch in this price bracket deserves to have an in house movement. The Oris Aquis 400 and Omega Seamaster 300 are two prime examples.
