Showing at WatchTime Live 2020: Bell & Ross BR 03-92 H.U.D. Edition

Bell & Ross famously planted its flag in the watch world with the introduction of the BR 01 Instrument, inspired by airplane cockpit clocks, in 2005. In 2010, the brand launched the first of a number of variations that took cues from other onboard instruments, such as radar screens and heading indicators. This year, Bell & Ross completes its Flight Instrument family with the BR 03-92 H.U.D. (Heads Up Display), a limited edition of 999 pieces, which will be among the brand’s showcase pieces at the WatchTime Live virtual collectors’ event on October 22-24.

The BR 03-92 H.U.D. completes the Flight Instrument series.

The Heads Up Display in a plane’s cockpit is a transparent glass screen, or windshield, that displays essential data in a digital form within a pilot’s visual field, the aim being to keep the pilot informed while still keeping his or her focus on the target ahead with minimal distraction. The technology, which began with the military in the 1950s, has since been adopted for civil aviation as well as for the automobile industry. The watch, housed in a square case made of matte black ceramic and measuring 42 mm in diameter, re-creates this high-tech screen on its three-layer dial.

The dial, hands, and crystal combine to channel the look of an H.U.D. indicator.

On the top layer, the green-tinted sapphire crystal features four brackets at the corners, printed on the underside and luminous-coated, representing the HUD’s line-of-sight frame. The minutes and seconds hands occupy the middle level, with their central parts purposefully hidden to emulate the digital displays on the instrument panel. At the base level is the main dial, with a triangular marker to indicate the hours, and hour and minute numerala and indices on concentric scales, all glowing bright green thanks to an application of Super-LumiNova C3. The green color, contrasted against the matte black, re-creates the graphic display of the H.U.D. indicator.

Bright green Super-LumiNova details make the watch legible in the dark.

The classical “circle in a square” case of the BR 03-92 H.U.D. is water resistant to 100 meters and contains the automatic BR-Cal.302, based on the Sellita SW300-1, whose power reserve is 42 hours. It is mounted on a black rubber strap with a black PVD-coated steel pin buckle; the watch also comes with an additional NATO strap made of ultra-resilient black synthetic fabric. It’s priced at $3,990.

The watch can be displayed on either a rubber of NATO fabric strap.

As much as I like the new stuff I find it too small. I’m wondering when the 46mm range get some attention. Nothing since White Laughing Skull??
