Ball Watch Co. celebrates 120 years of accuracy under adverse conditions with the Trainmaster One Hundred Twenty. Combining a dressy look, a solid 18K gold case, and Ball’s trademark micro gas tubes for excellent nighttime visibility, the Trainmaster One Hundred Twenty elegantly combines history and technology. In April, 1891, 120 years ago, two trains collided head-on at the depot in Kipton, Ohio, in what became known as the Kipton Fast Mail train tragedy. Several people were killed. As the story goes, an engineer’s slow watch may have been the cause. The incident prompted Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad to enlist Webb C. Ball to investigate timing conditions and to develop an inspection system to insure such a tragedy would never occur again. This lead to the creation of the Ball Time Service, and to the implementation of standardized practices for pocket watch manufacturing to assure dependable and accurate timepieces. Soon people were setting their watches by the train, and Ball’s name became synonymous with timeliness as phrases like “He’s on the ball” entered the lexicon.

To honor 120 years of accuracy under adverse conditions, Ball introduces the Trainmaster One Hundred Twenty in solid 18K rose gold. The case measures 39.5mm in diameter. The slightly domed dial is finished with a sunray pattern that catches light from every angle and is available in grey or silver. Below the dial, an automatic ETA caliber 2892 decorated with circular damask keeps the time. Self-powered micro-gas tubes on the hands and hour markers double as a nightlight. Don’t let the refined looks fool you – Ball claims this watch is shock resistant to 5000 Gs.

The Trainmaster One Hundred Twenty bears a European MSRP of 5,500 euros. Additional technical information appears below the images, which may be enlarged with a click.

    Hi Mike,

I read this article after having purchased a Trainmaster Eternity – love it. For the price, its function and fit is awesome.

However, later I noticed this watch and thought it was beautiful. Although more expensive, rose gold, I bought via my local Tourneau shop.

Big disappoint. Watch will not keep running. Its now one day old and am sending it back for warranty repair.

Not sure that QA/QC at Ball is that good. Thought the ETA 2892 is good movement. Can’t confirm that due to this watch. Maybe I should have bought the similar co-axial Omega. Now I wonder how long the Eternity will run.

    Comments?

    Hope that Ball responds well.

    • Mike/Aubrey,

Any feedback from Ball regarding the reasoning for the watch’s operation missteps? It is a Ball model I’m looking to purchase and this post s the only one I can find citing an issue. Any updates would be helpful.

      Thanks
      Joe

    • hello i had the same problem with an omega co-axial seamaster these are automatic watches they can go wrong but the most important thing is the customer care you get from the brand when things go wrong i became a great fun of Ball watches now after owning 3omega,2 oris,1rolex and in the end i settled with Ball Trainmaster 120 Years 18K Gold Watch this is a beautiful watch for the price i recommend it strongly.
