Accutron Adds Color in Expansion of its Spaceview 2020 Collection

Accutron spun off from its parent brand Bulova in 2020 and quickly established itself as a player with the launch of the Spaceview 2020, a revival of the now-iconic, original Accutron from 1960, which brought the watch world its first tuning-fork movement. The Spaceview 2020 continued the tradition of technological innovation established by its ancestor, debuting inside it an innovative electrostatic caliber that was five years in development. This year, following up the gold-cased limited edition released last fall, Accutron continues to expand the Spaceview 2020 collection with new color variations, unveiling green- and orange-strap versions at the recent Couture trade show in Las Vegas.

The 43.5-mm case is in polished stainless steel, with a domed sapphire crystal covering an exposed dial-side movement that faithfully replicates the then-radical look of the original Spaceview, with highlights in bright, metallic circuit-board green. The two new models introduced this year pair that green-and-metallic face with either a color-coordinated matte green or contrasting bright orange strap made of genuine, ethically sourced American alligator leather and equipped with easy-release spring bars.

Both new references of the Spaceview 2020 contain Accutron’s proprietary movement, powered by electrostatic energy generated from the motion of the wearer’s wrist. The movement’s fast-rotating twin turbines are affixed to two electrodes that send energy to an accumulator powering two tiny motors — one an electrostatic motor driving the smooth motion of the seconds hand (a world first), the other a step motor for the hour and minute hands — both synchronized through integrated circuits for an accuracy of +/- 5 seconds per month.

Both styles of the new Accutron Spaceview 2020 (green and orange straps) retail for $3,650. The green alligator strap is also available for purchase separately.

Both Alligator Straps compliment the Timepiece, while giving it a little more excitement. The Collection should explore different Case Shapes going forward, possibly a ‘Round in Cushion’, there was even a ‘Tuning Fork Logo Case, with Cushion Dial Opening. I’m still a little confused by the introducing of Retro-Case Designs from the ’60’s and ’70’s, though true to the Collection, make no sense being Mechanical, on a Timepiece born of ‘Electric” and Accuracy!
