Through a Glass Darkly: Introducing the Girard-Perregaux Laureato Absolute Rock

Today we’ll be taking a look at the recently released Girard-Perregaux Laureato Absolute Rock. The new, carbon glass-cased watch was first reveled as a concept piece earlier this year at SIHH, and is now materializing in a 100-limited edition run. Upon the first introduction of the watch, Girard-Perregaux extolled the sportiness that the new carbon glass material the piece offers, being 100 times more resistant than steel while being about eight times as light. It also used the material to highlight the ultimate sports complication in its chronograph, alongside its fully integrated rubber strap, together meant to display the watch’s versatility.

The case of the new model is 44 mm in diameter and uses GP’s Laureato series’ base design, with its sturdy integrated case and bracelet and octagonal bezel stacked over another circular aspect. The piece is obviously distinguished to the traditional Laureato by its almost “camo-style” blue-and-black-accented case— which is produced via an extreme compression process which results in a smooth and uniform texture between the compressed carbon and blue fibers — and by its prominent chronograph pushers and crown guard on its right side.

The dial of the new carbon glass chronograph is composed of two superimposed, hollowed plates, giving the face a little more depth and texture variation in its matte black features. On the outer edge of the dial is a curved minute ring, while each hour marker is sunken to reveal the bottom plate. A running seconds subdial is at the 3 o’clock position, with a 30-minute counter and 12-hour counter at the 9 and 6 o’clock positions, respectively. A subtle date window is placed at the 4:30 position and a matte Girard-Perregaux “GP” logo is placed at the top of the dial, with sword style hour and minute hands passing over both to tell the time.

Powering the watch is the GP03300-1058 automatic movement, capable of a 46-hour power reserve and holding an impressive 63 jewels. The movement is finished with côtes de Genève, circular graining and beveling, though all of these elements are hidden behind a solid caseback secured by six screws, engraved and lacquered with the Laureato Absolute logo.

The limited-edition model is currently priced by the brand at 15,900 Swiss francs (about $15,990), and will be available at select Girard-Perregaux boutiques globally.

This watch looks fabulous, but acquiring this may be difficult, as this is a limited edition.
