Sixties, Meet Seventies: The TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Montreal Limited Edition (With Live Photos)

Following up the launch of its Carrera 160 Years Silver Dial Limited Edition earlier this year, TAG Heuer has introduced a second collector’s edition to celebrate the 160th anniversary of the brand. The TAG Heuer Carrera 160 Years Montreal Limited Edition combines elements of the Carrera with those of another cult classic timepiece from the 1970s.

The inspiration behind this limited-edition timepiece, TAG Heuer says, stems from “fusing the designs and DNA of” the Carrera — introduced in 1962 by then-CEO Jack Heuer and named for the treacherous Carrera Panamericana road race — and the white Heuer Montreal, Ref. 110503W (pictured below), a cushion-shaped, bicompax chrono with a colorful dial that launched in 1972.

The anniversary model borrows the red, yellow, and blue color palette used on the original Montreal dial. The white opaline dial, sporting the vintage Heuer logo (sans “TAG”), features rhodium-plated hands and three blue “azurage” subdial counters.

The new chronograph Ref. CBK221C.FC6488 is limited to 1,000 pieces.

The chronograph minute counter at 3 o’clock aligns with the brand’s 1970’s aesthetic, sporting three yellow lines, curving from 1-to-5, 10-to-15, and 20-to-25. The same yellow accents are seen on the central minute and hour hands, while the central chronograph seconds hand has a bold red lacquer finish. Circling the inner edge of the dial, which is protected under a sapphire crystal, is a white flange with a 60-second-minute scale. The stainless-steel case, which measures 39 mm in diameter, uses polished steel for the crown positioned at 3 o’clock and for the chronograph push-buttons flanking it at 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock.

A Modern Engine: TAG Heuer Caliber Heuer 02

The tribute model uses the in-house automatic Caliber Heuer 02 movement, a thinner movement than its predecessor, measuring at 6.95 mm in thickness (bringing the total height of the watch to approx. 14.5 mm). It’s comprised of 168 components, including a column wheel and a vertical clutch for the chronograph function, and boasts a power reserve of 80 hours (an increase of 30 hours compared to its predecessor, the Caliber Heuer 01, according to the brand). The vertical clutch, Heuer explains, improves the precision of the start-and-stop functions as well as the running of the chronograph second hand, ensuring no loss of time when using the chronograph function. The column wheel’s presence, most pronounced when the wearer operates the push-buttons, provides a more accurate and precise functionality, with a frequency of 4 Hz (28,800 vph).

I prefer the look of the Montreal by far even though it has a weird case. The Carrera looks plasticy.

Would be a great piece if priced around the mid 3’s. For $6,750, there are so many better options
