Every year is a good year for diver’s watches, but 2022 seems to even top its forerunners. Among the latest manufacturers to explore the deep waters is Swiss traditional brand Longines, with it now reviving a fast-paced jewel from its history in the Ultra-Chron Diver, the model based upon a vintage original which first plunged into the waves in 1968.
The new Ultra-Chron stays faithful to its predecessor and has its entrance in a cushion-shaped stainless steel case. Water-resistant to 300 meters, it is fitted with a unidirectional bezel boasting a sapphire insert with luminescent accents and a screwed-in case back and crown. The vintage-style dial has a slightly grained surface and features the characteristic bright-red minute hand. In addition, the original Ultra Chron-logo is displayed.
However, not only the design is inspired by the original Ultra-Chron Diver but also the modern genuine automatic caliber, L836.6, that oscillates with a 5 hertz high-frequency which translates to 10 beats every second.
In contrast to the original, today’s Ultra-Chron has been certified as an “Ultra-Chronometer” by TIMELAB, an independent Geneva-based testing laboratory. This distinction goes beyond the chronometer certification and is proudly inscribed into the closed case back.
The watch will be available with a leather strap or metal bracelet and come with an additional NATO strap made of recycled material. Retail for the new Longines Ultra-Chron starts at $3,500.
