Industrial Strength: G-Shock Introduces Three Heavy-Duty Models in GA900 Collection

G-Shock watches are synonymous with toughness, born from their creator Kikuo Ibe’s dream of “creating a watch that never breaks.” More than 200 handmade prototypes were created and tested to destruction until finally, in April 1983, the first and now-iconic shock-resistant G-Shock DW-500C hit the streets of Japan and began to establish itself as “the toughest watch of all time.” In August 2017, parent company Casio reported that total worldwide shipments of its G-Shock watches had passed the one million mark. This week, G-Shock announced three new models in its industrial-inspired GA900 collection geared toward “supreme toughness and style.”

The new GA900C-1A4 models band connection and buttons have knurled surfaces to prevent the watch from slipping off the wrist.

These new watches come in vibrant colors, with visible inner cases embodying the practical design of the 1983 classic, here updated with 10-sided bezels resembling the shape of industrial fastener and secured by four silver-colored screws. The new GA900 models’ band connection and buttons have knurled surfaces to prevent the watch from slipping off the wrist. The analog hands conjoined with the digital display readouts create a powerful face design.

Casio G-Shock GA900A-1A9 comes in a black case presented on a neon yellow-colored dial accents mounted on a matching colored resin strap.

The GA900A-1A9 model features a black case with neon yellow-colored dial accents, mounted on a matching colored resin strap, while the GA900C-1A4 has a black-colored case with silver dial accents and a bright orange-colored cloth strap. The GA900E-1A3 model comes with two interchangeable straps: one in black-shaded resin, the other in cloth with a highly reflective yellow material.

The GA900C-1A4 comes mounted on a bright orange-colored cloth band.

Each model in this collection of “gadget” watches includes a shock-resistant case that is water-resistant to 200 meters; a seven-year battery life; five daily alarms with one snooze alarm; a world-time function for 31 time zones and 48 cities; and an LED light for optimal nighttime readability. The 1/100-second stopwatch function includes direct access and a target alarm, and the 1/10-second countdown timer can be set up to 60 minutes.

The GA900A-1A9 model retails for $120, the GA900C-1A4 for $130, and the GA900E-1A3 for $160. The new series is available for purchase at the end of August at select G-Shock retailers and online. The new GA900 series will also include an all-black-colored GA900-1A model, a navy GA900-2A model (pictured below), and a red GA900-4A model, all of which will hit the market in September and retail for $120.

  2. I have a 5445 for 2 1/2 years & now it won’t keep time, took it to a watch store twice to set time but lost time again in 2 days, I always gave plenty of light to recharge but still lost time.
I don’t want to spend another $100+ for a watch that lasts 2 years?!
    I like the G shock for it’s ruggedness .
    Any suggestions?

It is probably a great watch in that category, and I haven’t seen IRL, but why does Casio insist on having these cluttered faces with poor legibility?
Imagine if they learnt from the bauhaus design principles, and were inspired by something like the IWC Ocean 2000. That would be something I’d buy immediately, and I do own and use some G-shocks.
