Watch enthusiasts love sophisticated retro-style timepieces, particularly when they are combined with a genuine caliber. One of the latest examples in this area is the Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Manufacture, a limited edition that pays tribute to the “bumper movement” the Swiss tradition company used in the 1950s. The name comes from its particular design: Its oscillating weight turned 120° instead of the common 360°. At either end of its trajectory, a small spring sent the mass back in the opposite direction, facilitating the winding process.
Today, movements with such a design are extremely rare, so it is quite a feat that Alpina puts the tiny bumper into the spotlight again. However, the genuine AL-709 Manufacture caliber features an oscillating weight that rotates 330 degrees and the original springs have been replaced by a blade for greater rotation. It is a real pleasure to look at the golden-plated movement through the exhibition case back.
This gem is housed in the classic Startimer Pilot Heritage design. The cushion-shaped case has a diameter of 42mm, is water-resistant to 100 meters, and features a crown at 4 o’clock. The Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Manufacture rides a brown calf leather strap and is available in stainless steel and gold-plated stainless steel. Both versions are limited to 188 pieces each. They retail for $2,850 respectively $2,950.
