Showing at WatchTime New York 2018: Glashütte Original Senator Cosmopolite

WatchTime New York, America’s largest luxury watch show, returns to the Big Apple in October. As we countdown to the big event, taking place at Manhattan’s Gotham Hall on October 26-27, we’ll be previewing many of the new watches that guests will discover there. Today we’re taking a look at the latest update to Glashütte Original‘s Senator line of timepieces.

Released at Baselworld this year, the Glashütte Original Senator Cosmopolite is a direct descendant of a 2015 timepiece that, at the time, we described as the highlight of the brand’s 2015 showcase thanks to a new manufacture movement that displayed 36 time zones. Here, we see that same movement and globe trotter-intended functionality on display with a cleaned-up dial layout and a new case material.

Previously only available in white and rose gold, the new Senator Cosmopolite introduces a stainless steel shell to the mix, making the watch not only more feasible as a daily wearer and travel companion but also making it more accessible price-wise. The reformatted dial focuses mainly on the color scheme which maintains the same matte white lacquered dial but features additional dark blue notes with black details that cause the original watch’s strict sobriety to become easier on the eyes. Other design differences range from black Roman numerals switching to Arabic supplemented by blue appliques, the minute track evolving from its original railroad-style to separated markers, and the day/night indicator losing its colored night sky and yellow sun for a more consistent design tone.

Other than those major differences in material and design, the 44-mm watch is by-and-large identical to its predecessor. All its hands are made of blued steel and the central hour and minutes are poire-shaped. These hands tell the local time, which corresponds to the time-zone indicator – two apertures (for standard and for daylight saving) found at 8 o’clock. It has a big date display at 4 and a day/night indicator at 9; both of these correspond to the local time. The subdial at 12 o’clock is devoted to the home time, while a small aperture indicates day from night. The home subdial also has Arabic numerals on the hours. An arc across the subdial notes how much of the 72-hour power reserve remains.

Setting the displays is quite simple. If you’ve traveled east from home, turn the crown at 4:00 clockwise; for west, go counter-clockwise. As the crown turns, the IATA code for different time zones will appear in the aperture at 8 o’clock. Each of the 24 time zones that are offset from GMT by a whole hour appear in black lettering. The 9 time zones offset by half-hour increments are in blue, and the remaining three that use quarter-hour increments are in red. As you watch the time-zone display turn to your appointed destination, the center-mounted hour and minutes hands will rotate by hour and quarter-hour increments to reach the appropriate local time.

The overall ease of use is due to the in-house Calibre 89-02 that is powered by an off-center micro-rotor inside the watch to reach a power reserve of 72 hours. The rotor is skeletonized and features a 21-karat gold oscillating weight, styled with the Glashütte Original logo. It is a Glashütte-style three-quarter plate with Geneva waves. Beside this plate and on a slightly lower plane is the balance, with an ornate and hand-engraved bridge. The balance beats at 28,800 vph. In total, the movement has roughly 430 parts; it runs in 63 jewels.

In summary, the Glashütte Original Senator Cosmopolite is a necessary addition to the brand’s catalog of utilitarian travel time watches. While the rose and white gold versions hammered home the German brand’s fondness for precious metals, the stainless steel version is where the watch’s inherent functionality shines.

The watch comes with a dark blue Louisana alligator leather strap with your choice of a pin buckle or fold-over clasp. It’s priced at $21,200 for the former and $21,500 for the latter.
