WatchTime Special Design Issue 2019 - Cover

For our cover feature, “Linking Past to Present,” Senior Editor Mark Bernardo explores the history, evolution, and modern updating of the TAG Heuer Link and the factors that led the Swiss brand to revamp the model, its best-selling collection in the 1990s, for the 21st century.

In “Back to the Cockpit,” Veteran watch designer Guy Bové, who came aboard as Creative Director of Breitling just as new ownership turned that venerable Swiss brand around, speaks to Chronos Editor-in-Chief and WatchTime contributor Rüdiger Bucher about the challenges of creating a new product line and redefining the brand’s corporate identity.

With over 100 million watches sold in 35 years, Casio’s G-Shock has earned its iconic status in the watch world. In the in-depth feature “Purity in Design: The G-Shock Revolution,” Editor Logan R. Baker covers the highlights of the G-Shock’s road to worldwide fame, including insights from the man who created it, Kikuo Ibe.

Often overlooked in favor of sportier or more complicated watches, Patek Philippe annually releases a small universe of artistic timepieces for collectors and aficionados, featuring marquetry, cloisonné enamel, and many other decorative techniques. Contributor Maria-Bettina Eich leads a tour through some of Patek’s rare handcrafted highlights.

Plus: Panda-dial chronographs; the rise of green dials; watch designs incorporating ultra-modern materials; watches inspired by the animal kingdom and the ocean; how 3D architecture plays a role in case, dial, and movement design; 2018 Red Dot Design Award winners; and more.

TAG-Heuer’s New Link Chronograph, the Brand finally recognizes the potential of what was the Collection that launched it’s own re-birth in ’88, the S/el (now evolved into a 2nd generation Link). Brand awareness, and visibility with most is determined by cosmetics, the Head, the Bezel, the Shape, even a Crown Protector, with this execution, the Brand finally re-recognizes the Bracelet pattern that for so many years has been used to create Limited editions etc., cross pollinating in lesser Collections compromising the higher impact of the Brands natural hero Collection. Though Link had retreated with all of the Homage Collections, various attempts at Carrera, more than any other, there is a dynamism with this, and in my opinion a return to the Uni-Directional Bezel would be a plus, adding the Tachymeter to the area above the Minute-Second Track, where needed for Function. The new Pushers are an enhancement, and though the initial product did have a patterned Brown Strap, something bolder, whether Rubber or another coming off the Head-Link can be an alternative, as well as boldly colored Straps as were implemented in ’96. I’m glad to this Collection is finally getting the attention it deserves, iconic and one chosen regardless of economic class and a natural connection to the Brands history having been worn by Ayrton Senna throughout the relationship. “Back to the Future, the Once and Future King!”
