With the Ocean Race Diver, Ulysse Nardin continues its commitment to sustainability. Limited to 200 pieces and water-resistant to 300 meters, the debutant is presented with a strap entirely made of yarn from recycled fishing nets, which the company sources from the French manufacturer JTTI. The eco-responsible approach also includes packaging from Helly Hansen which is crafted from plastic found in oceans. In addition, the 44-millimeter case is partly made from recycled materials: The case sides and bottom are made of 60 percent recycled fishing nets, while the stainless steel parts are 80 percent recycled steel from the automotive industry.
In addition to these environmental friendly features, the majority of the self-winding UN-118 manufacture movement which uses the brand’s innovative silicon and DiamonSil escapement technology is sourced within a radius of 30 kilometers from Ulysse Nardin’s hometown Le Locle.
It amasses a power reserve of 60 hours and is equipped with a power reserve indicator which is positioned at 12 o’clock on the anthracite dial. As is crucial for this watch type, the face is framed by a unidirectional diver’s bezel. It has a carbon-like decoration with a marble effect and is made using waste materials of aircraft parts. The transparent case back is adorned with the logo of regatta The Ocean Race, which is a partner of Ulysse Nardin. The watch will be available from June 22 and will retail for USD $11,500.

Overall I admire the theme and construction of the Ocean Race Diver. Still, while using recycled materials is a big plus in my book, I just dont see the price. Perhaps with a better price point, and less “limited” numbers, UN could sell far more of these. By doing so, UN could introduce more clients to their brand.

I consider myself lucky to own two Ulysses Nardin watches before they started to make goofy looking time pieces.
