Oris Big Crown Date

Oris Big Crown Date Gray dial detailThe growing fraternity of dark-tinted “stealth” watches welcomes another member with the arrival of the Oris Big Crown Date, which features a bold, gray-colored dial, accented by applied 3D gray numerals and indices made from a solid block of dark Super-LumiNova.

The watch’s 44-mm case is made of stainless steel and finished with a coat of gray PVD. Like other models in Oris’s aviation-inspired  Big Crown collection, it includes a fluted bezel, a screw-down caseback, and — naturally — a big, fluted screw-down crown that is easy to grip for a pilot wearing aviator gloves. The color scheme of this timepiece is meant to evoke the look of military stealth aircraft. The case is water-resistant to 100 meters.

The four big numerals — 12, 3, 6, and 9 — as well as the hour indices, made of solid Super-LumiNova, provide a subtle but attractive contrast with the gray dial. The date window is at 3 o’clock and features white numerals on a black background. The watch has a domed sapphire crystal with nonreflective coating on the inside. The dark leather strap has a steel pin buckle, also coated in gray PVD.

The movement that powers the Big Crown Date is Oris Caliber 733, based on the Sellita SW 200-1, which has automatic winding by means of Oris’s instantly recognizable red rotor, which rotates in both directions. Caliber 733’s functions include an instant date corrector and a stop-seconds function, and it caries a power reserve of about 38 hours. Wearers can witness the movement in action through the exhibition caseback, which is made of mineral glass. The price is $1,750. (Click on photos for larger images.)
